Tenet movie delayed indefinitely due to the rising cases of covid19.

For those of you that are cinephiles like I am, it seems "Tenet", the highly touted Christopher Nolan film that was supposed to not only save the movie theater industry this year, but also get the ball rolling on other films to be released theatrically, has been postponed in indefinitely due to the rising numbers of the coronavirus.

It's been widely rumored that Disney might start considering releasing both Mulan and Black Widow on VOD (short for video on demand) if either of those films were forced to be delayed AGAIN like they have recently.  Keep in mind, that isn't confirmed, but it's been rumored that's what Disney might do if theaters don't reopen anytime soon.   However, what is confirmed is that "Tenet" is being delayed indefinitely.

Some of you might be wondering, why not just release these films on VOD, but here's the thing.  While it's true that "Trolls World Tour" did make a lot of money on VOD, and made more money than a lot of other films that did previously come out in theaters in the past that were considered hits by today's standards   However, we have yet to see "Trolls World Tour's" success duplicated by anyone else, even by Universal that made the freaking film.

Therefore, movies STILL make more money in theaters than they do on streaming or VOD, as this is a fact that has yet to be disproved.   However, given the pandemic, film studios already know that any film that comes out this year, and possibly early next year, is going to take a hit financially.  And according to some sources, movie studios aren't going to release a film unless both Los Angeles and New York reopen their theaters because a) those are the two highest grossing cities for box office revenue, and b) they want to try to make as much money as they possibly can even if they take a hit financially.

Therefore, I ask you all this.  Should movie studios and theaters just release the films they keep delaying in whatever theaters that are open anyways, even without New York and Los Angeles?   Or should studios start to seriously consider the idea that maybe releasing films VOD and streaming is the way of the future for now, and leave theaters behind if necessary if it means saving their own jobs?   Please discuss.

I want to see Tenet in theaters but I get the hesitation. I think most number crunchers thought theaters would be open now. Should studios go to vod or wait for theaters to open. I wish I knew.

The way things are going, all movie releases large and small are likely to be delayed indefinitely. Might as well get used to it.

Nolan's movies look brilliant in the theater. The visual experience is part of the story. I understand that he is waiting for when the theaters open.  “Hamilton” on Disney makes sense because it's a filmed play, though they used four to six cameras, and shot 13 or 14 numbers separately. “Trolls World Tour” also did well because of the demographics—kids. With that, it depends on the movie.
There are other movies that were supposed to launch the moviegoing experience again—not just “Tenet.” Russell Crowe’s “Unhinged” is one of them, still not released.
