DOGE cuts $900 million from agency that tracks American students’ academic progress
A federal research agency that tracks the progress of America’s students is being hit with almost $900 million in cuts after Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency found no need for much of its work.
Some of the biggest contracts were for long-term studies that track students’ learning from kindergarten through high school, a study evaluating strategies for teaching elementary school reading, and research on the effectiveness of supports for youth with disabilities, according to list of cuts obtained by The Associated Press.
OH WELL.

Thank goodness the bloat has been cut here also....
"Clinical trials have been delayed, contracts canceled and support staff fired. With deeper cuts coming, some are warning of potential harms to veterans."
At the Veterans Affairs hospital in Pittsburgh, researchers spent months preparing for a clinical trial of a new drug to treat advanced cancers of the mouth, throat and voice box.
They were ready last month to start enrolling patients — veterans whose cancer had spread to other tissue and who had run out of treatment options.
Then a problem arose.
The hospital was unable to renew the job of a key staff member involved in running the study, a typically routine process thwarted by a hiring freeze imposed under the government-cutting project led by President Trump and Elon Musk. Suddenly, the clinical trial was on hold.
“They were ready to enroll,” said Alanna Caffas, the chief executive of the Veterans Health Foundation, which administers the trials. “They had the lab kits on site. They had the drug to dispense. But they couldn’t get the clinical research coordinator renewed.”
OH WELL... These people need to realize that folks voted for these cuts... Maybe they'll find help elsewhere. Or maybe not, a lot of people don't really care, they're more impressed by the big numbers musk is posting.

Here is the most important reason I don't reply to this type of post, I am not ignoring them--- I visibly see you don't understand that these cuts would be pending, and decided in the end by congress...
The cuts you're referring to, particularly those related to clinical trials, contracts, and support staff in the context of veterans' programs, are not necessarily a done deal just yet. Such cuts would typically have to go through a formal process before they are finalized.
If these cuts are part of the federal budget or specific policy proposals, they would likely need to be approved by Congress. The president might propose these cuts, but it’s Congress that ultimately decides whether to pass them through the appropriations process. Once Congress approves any cuts or changes, they would be implemented by the relevant government agencies.
So, while the cuts may have been proposed, they still require approval from Congress. There will be many back and forth, and the cuts may never come to fruition. IT's fine to point out proposals, but your context appears to share these cuts are a done deal. You could ask what others think of a given proposal to cut a program.
Proposing a savings cut is just that-- a recommendation in most cases, Congress has the last word.
I really think you're misunderstanding that cuts have already been made, programs canceled and funding eliminated. Agency heads can manage contracting functions within their agencies, including contract terminations.
I shared this in a comment to Cred --- "However, if a program was created by the agency head, the situation changes. While the head of a government agency has the authority to cut or alter a program or study funded by the agency’s budget without Congressional approval, there are key limitations. When discussing program cuts, staffing changes, or halting studies, the process is complex. Ultimately, if Congress has allocated funds for a program, they are the only ones with the power to eliminate it. If the study is funded through the agency's budget, the agency head has the authority to cut it, Sharlee

DOGE job cuts bring pain to Trump heartland..
Jennifer Piggott, a former Trump supporter, regrets her choice after being fired from her job at the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Fiscal Service. Following significant cuts led by the Trump administration and Elon Musk's cost-cutting efforts, hundreds of federal workers, including veterans, are facing economic hardships in Parkersburg, West Virginia.
Jennifer Piggott proudly hung a red-and-blue Trump campaign flag outside her one-story home during the November election race. Now, after she was abruptly fired from her civil service job, her days of supporting the president are over.
The renunciation of allegiance to Trump by Piggott, a church-going conservative and three-time Trump voter, comes as political analysts are parsing early signs of a possible backlash in Republican strongholds where the government-slashing efforts of the president and his cost-cutting czar Elon Musk are beginning to be felt...

Omg, Republican voters suffering under President Trump?
Oh yes the heart of maga will feel the most pain. Their states have poor job prospects, poor economies, they are at the bottom of the educational ladder and they use the great majority of public welfare. This bunch knows they're easy targets.
I shouldn't say serves them right, because my reasoning tells me they're illiterates. I've empathy. Cuting down cost is not to make the poor lost they source of livehood, except they're not qualify for the post.
It's important to realize that President Donald Trump's popularity is at an all time high. Much of what democrats claim is just plain untrue.
Another judge they'll be calling to impeach...
A federal judge ruled Tuesday that Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) likely exercised unconstitutional authority “in multiple ways” in dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). DOGE and Musk likely violated the Constitution's Appointments Clause and separation of powers.
U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang’s ruling in favor of 26 current and former U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) workers seeks to “delay a premature, final shutdown” of the agency while litigation continues.
His order requires DOGE to reinstate email and system access to current USAID employees and blocks DOGE personnel from taking “any actions relating” to the agency, without express permission of a USAID official with legal authority.
It marks the first time a judge has ruled that Musk is likely exercising enough independent authority to require him to be confirmed by the Senate under the Constitution’s Appointments Clause.
“The record of his activities to date establishes that his role has been and will continue to be as the leader of DOGE, with the same duties and degree of continuity as if he was formally in that position,’” wrote Chuang...
Anyone betting that the judges order will be ignored??

Yet another specific impact of Elon and Doge...
The Social Security Administration said on Tuesday that people who wanted to file for benefits or change the bank where their payments are deposited could no longer do so by phone and must first verify their identity online or go into a field office.
The change, which takes effect on March 31, is expected to add stress to the agency’s already thinning work force, which is being significantly downsized as part of the broad effort to aggressively shrink the federal government. At the same time, the change would also make things more difficult for older and disabled beneficiaries who may have trouble getting into an office or struggle with online services.
Doge, yet again billionaires making things easy! But please, throw out more numbers of vague cuts ..
AND don't forget that Elon is closing many of the social security offices... A win-win all the way around, right?
Now here's something absolutely fantastic... A town in New York is closing it's social security office under elon's dictate and the next closest office is 135 mi away! Tell me that cruelty isn't the point. Fingers crossed that all of elon's changes come to a town near you...

47 Local Social Security Offices to Close After DOGE Cuts by Kiplinger
https://www.kiplinger.com/retirement/so … -doge-cuts
Here's the list of the 47 local Social Security Offices that have been or are in the process of being closed.
The article shares related material and the list of offices closing is about half way down the article. Interestingly the second entry is an office about 20 miles from me. It says the Carlsbad office, but there never has been one there. It has always been in Oceanside. So, there is confusion by DOGE's announcement for closing.
Status of Oceanside Social Security office in doubt amid DOGE cuts by kpbs (Feb 26, 2025
https://www.kpbs.org/news/politics/2025 … -doge-cuts
"As Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) continues its cuts across the federal government, North County was thrown into confusion as to the status of the Oceanside Social Security Administration office Wednesday.
Rep. Mike Levin, D-Dana Point, wasn't sure of the office's status.
"The DOGE website says the Carlsbad, CA Social Security Office has been closed, but technically there is no Carlsbad office (it's in Oceanside, just across the border with Carlsbad)," Levin wrote on the social media platform Threads. "I'm going to get to the bottom of what's happening. Hands off Social Security, Elon Musk!"
I think this is a good idea.
It's a great step toward eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse of the Social Security System.
I'm all for it.
How so? Because people won't be able to actually get into an office?? I mean is that the point? Hey hopefully your area will get to experience this great change!
I can drive. People can be driven. There are ways responsible people can get to a location when necessary.
It's not a big deal.
Why should they have to? Because the government tells you so? Because the government thinks it's a great idea for you to make a 270 mi round trip for a social security appointment?? That's lunacy. How many more barriers can they throw in front of people before they just give up? But that's likely the idea.
Well, it's obvious you don't deal with the government much. I know vets who regularly drive over a hundred miles to get to the VA for an appointment.
This is just the reality of where they choose to live. It's no big deal.
If someone is going to give up because they have to travel a distance to go to a social security office once, it doesn't mean that much to them.
It is a BIG deal, making it more difficult for recipients to receive their benefits is a classic Republican prerequisite toward denying them all together. Closing polling places in urban areas is a case in point.
I hope that enough of the oldsters pay attention and recognize that Republicans by their very nature couldn't care less about their welfare.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. The democrat cry that everyone is a victim, nobody can do anything, all people are helpless.
It doesn't hold water anymore.
It's time democrats realize most people are intelligent enough and responsible enough to make it to a Social Security Center to get their benefits.
"Closing polling places in urban areas is a case in point."
So? Then there is vote by mail.
Not everyone is a victim and unable to be responsible. This type of thinking is probably one of the reasons democrats are so very unpopular right now.
I think we have come to the stage where such mentality, such ideology, such rhetoric needs to be sought out and eliminated throughout the education and federal government system completely, within the next 3 years...
Or when the pendulum swings back, they will become the very terror, the very tyranny they project on to Trump and his supporters who are trying to right the ship and sail it into better waters...
You could say there is still a very real chance that America meanders down the pathway to something similar to what Stalin bestowed upon the Russian people... Trump isn't the threat, but who comes after, on the Left, very well may bring it to existence.
Funny how those on the Left are the ones who use violence, as they are now against Tesla and Trump Towers, they are the ones that use words like resistance and revolution... while Trump supporters use words like Patriotism, America first, and say things like citizens come first before foreign migrants.
"Funny how those on the Left are the ones who use violence"
VERY true.
A television commentator made the statement that illustrated this the best.
They said when people on the right were angry because the transgender Dylan Mulvaney was made the representative for Bud Light no violence or vandalism was done against Bud Light. People on the right simply stopped buying Bud Light. The product was boycotted by it's customers. After losing significant amounts of money, the company changed its ways.
This is how it should be done. I often wonder if those on the left are just plain unintelligent or that TDS is a very real thing.
Me too there are over 1,200 offices, and some of what is being closed were scheduled to be closed due to a lack of traffic. This is a media blitz... To get some all bent out of shape. This is being done to promote efficiency, and save funds.
I live about 10 miles from the capital of Idaho, where the nearest SS office is located. At one point I tried for 2 months to get an appointment (they won't see you without that) and finally gave up. I don't see the closing of offices as an impediment to anything.
As far as proving identity - I understand that liberals actively HATE that concept, but it really is integral to an awful lot of what we do today, from cashing a check to driving a car to getting a job. I 100% support identity checks to take money from the SS account.
Closing offices is going to facilitate efficiency? Is your local office closing?

Food Safety Jeopardized by Onslaught of Funding and Staff Cuts
The Trump administration halted some food testing and shut down a committee studying bacteria in infant formula.
At the Agriculture Department, a committee studying deadly bacteria was recently disbanded, even as it was developing advice on how to better target pathogens that can shut down the kidneys. Committee members were also devising an education plan for new parents on bacteria that can live in powdered infant formula. “Further work on your report and recommendations will be prohibited,” read a Trump administration email to the committee members.
Key committees shut down
Often in response to a deadly outbreak, a joint F.D.A. and Agriculture Department committee dived into the details to seek ways to improve detection and to limit illness and death. The committee has also examined how to deploy rapidly changing technology — including artificial intelligence and genome sequencing — to protect public health.
The Trump administration abruptly shut down the committee earlier this month, citing the executive order on reducing government bureaucracy. It demanded that work stop for the panel called the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods and also for the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection.
The microbial committee was studying how to more accurately identify infants who would be most at risk from cronobacter sakazakii, the deadly bacteria that contributed to the decision to temporarily shut down an Abbott Nutrition infant formula plant in Michigan in 2022. The committee planned to then provide advice to caregivers who should use sterile liquid formula instead of powdered formula, which is not sterile.
A Committees that advise the government on meat inspections and microbiological safety were also abruptly shut down at the U.S. Department of Agriculture

Scientists at the F.D.A.’s product and food testing labs said they were barred from some routine use of their government credit cards because of an executive order backing the efforts of Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency.

This ruling represents yet another legal victory for the Trump administration at the federal appeals court level, further reinforcing its efforts to maintain control over USAID and its operations.
On Friday, a federal appeals court ruled in favor of the Trump administration, granting its motion to extend a stay that allows the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to continue operating at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This decision marks the third appeals court victory for the administration.
Last week, a federal judge in Maryland had ruled that efforts to halt USAID’s functions were likely unconstitutional and ordered its reinstatement. However, on Tuesday, a federal appeals court in Richmond, Virginia, issued a stay that temporarily blocked the judge’s order, preventing DOGE from working with USAID. The ruling also barred biopharmaceutical executive Jeremy Levin from leading the agency.
A group of 26 unidentified current and former USAID employees and contractors had alleged that the Trump administration unlawfully canceled government contracts, placed USAID personnel on administrative leave, reduced the workforce, shut down headquarters, and took down the website. They claimed these actions violated the U.S. Constitution’s appointments clause because Elon Musk, acting as DOGE administrator, had not been properly appointed. Additionally, they argued that dismantling USAID encroached on Congress’ authority.
The Trump administration pushed back against these claims, asserting that Musk serves as a senior advisor to the president and that the actions at USAID were carried out by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in his role as acting USAID administrator. Rubio had designated Peter Marocco as deputy administrator, and in accordance with President Trump’s executive order, USAID established an internal DOGE team led by Lewin. The administration maintained that all alleged unconstitutional actions fell within agency discretion and the president’s authority over foreign policy.
Despite these arguments, the district court had initially granted the employees’ and contractors’ request for a preliminary injunction, effectively blocking DOGE from operating at USAID. The judge found that the administration had “likely” violated the Constitution and ruled that halting DOGE’s activities was in the public interest. The court later clarified that Lewin, who led the USAID DOGE team prior to the injunction, could no longer serve as chief operating officer at USAID and declined to modify its decision.
The Trump administration swiftly appealed both the preliminary injunction and the denial of its request for clarification or modification. It also filed an emergency motion to stay the injunction while the appeal was underway.
On Friday, U.S. Court of Appeals Circuit Judges Arthur Marvin Quattlebaum Jr. and Paul V. Niemeyer ruled in favor of Musk and DOGE, stating that they had made a strong showing that they were likely to succeed on appeal and would suffer irreparable harm without the stay. They also determined that allowing DOGE to continue its work was in the public interest.
Looks like Trump is doing well with appeals, and all is being done with good speed.

Dem states to blame for most of the nearly $400 million in unemployment fraud over last 4 years, DOGE says

The three Democrat-led states accounted for $305 million in improper claim payments, DOGE said Thursday.

Willow asked a great question- one I can not answer. However, I think the article is interesting, and all Americans should be aware of some of the DOGE findings --- Here is the article in full.
"After finding $382 million in fraudulent unemployment payments since 2020, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) identified California, New York and Massachusetts as the primary culprits.
The three Democrat-led states accounted for $305 million in improper claim payments, DOGE said Thursday.
The group added that California also accounted for 68% of the benefits that were dispensed under former President Joe Biden to parolees identified by federal authorities as being on the government's terrorist watchlist, or who had criminal records. California, New York and Massachusetts all have a Democratic trifecta — meaning Democrats control the state House, Senate and the governor's office. They also have a Democratic triplex, which includes party control of the Attorney General, Secretary of State and governorship.
"There’s a reason for the mass exodus from Democrat-run states that have mismanaged their economies and driven residents to the nearest Republican-led state," White House spokesperson Harrison Fields told Fox News Digital. "High taxes, poor stewardship of taxpayer dollars and progressive policies continue to yield negative results, which is why Americans overwhelmingly support the work of DOGE."
Earlier this week, DOGE reported that since 2020, hundreds of millions in fraudulent unemployment benefits went to tens of thousands of recipients listed as over 115 years old, between ages 1 and 5, or even with birthdates that haven't occurred yet.
"This is another incredible discovery by the DOGE team, finding nearly $400 million in fraudulent unemployment payments. The Labor Department is committed to recovering Americans’ stolen tax dollars. We will catch these thieves and keep working to root out egregious fraud," said Labor Department Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.
Additionally, DOGE also found this week that it was "routine" under the Biden administration to admit immigrants into the country with minimal screening and, as a result, led to more than 6,000 people — either with criminal records, or flagged on the FBI's terror watchlist — entering the country.
Furthermore, DOGE found, hundreds of these people were able to collect public benefits — including approximately $42,000 through the government's unemployment insurance program. These people also collected money from federal student loan programs, food stamp programs and IRS tax refunds.
The Trump administration ended parole for everyone identified as having a criminal record or being on the FBI's terror watchlist."
Not going to share my view; I think it would be apparent.
Musk’s Latest Fraud Finding Isn’t What It Seems
"His team found cases of seemingly fake people receiving unemployment benefits. But that fake data exists for a reason....
“Your tax dollars were going to pay fraudulent unemployment claims for fake people born in the future!” Mr. Musk posted on X, his social media platform. “This is so crazy that I had to read it several times before it sank in.”
He shared a claim by the group that it had even uncovered someone with a birth date in 2154 who claimed $41,000 in unemployment.
These were, indeed, probably fake people — but in a different way than Mr. Musk seemed to realize. It was also most likely a case of his team discovering fraud that had already been discovered by someone else.
The issue dates to early in the pandemic when millions of Americans surged onto state unemployment rolls in an unprecedented expansion of the safety net. The emergency aid program enacted during President Trump’s first term was also susceptible to fraud. As many as 15 percent of unemployment claims were fraudulent, often using stolen identities.
To preserve records of that fraud and protect victims of the identity theft, the U.S. Labor Department encouraged state agencies that administer unemployment benefits to create “pseudo claim” records — in effect, to tie real cases of fraud in their data to make-believe people. The implausibility of the records was the point. Agencies were seeking a way to keep track of fraud claims while detaching them from the identities of innocent people who might one day apply for unemployment benefits themselves."
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/12/upsh … aims.html#
I question the article's objectivity. It does come across as a “look here, not there” kind of piece. At first glance, it seems like the article is trying to fact-check Elon Musk’s claim that fake people, like someone born in 2154, received unemployment benefits. That part is factual: Musk did post this on X (formerly Twitter), and the example he gave is a real entry from the unemployment records. It’s also true that there was massive fraud during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, with watchdogs and the Department of Labor estimating that 10–15% or more of claims may have been fraudulent. And yes, during that time, the Labor Department did direct states to create “pseudo claims", basically fake entries, to document confirmed fraud without tying it to real, stolen identities. That’s a real, documented strategy.
However, where the article shifts from fact to opinion is in how it interprets Musk’s post. It heavily implies that Musk misunderstood what he found, that he failed to realize these were deliberate, known pseudo-claims created by the government for a good reason. But the article doesn’t actually provide evidence that Musk misunderstood anything. It never quotes him beyond the original post or asks him for clarification. Instead, it leans on phrases like “probably fake people, but in a different way” or “most likely a case of fraud that had already been discovered.” These are speculative statements presented as corrections, without confirming any of the assumptions they make about Musk or his team’s intentions. That’s opinion disguised as fact.
What’s also missing from this article is any curiosity about why these fraudulent records are still showing up now. Whether they were part of the original pseudo-claim effort or not, their ongoing presence raises legitimate questions. Are they still active in the system? Are they impacting budget or record totals today? Is this a case of poor data hygiene or a lack of proper cleanup? The article doesn’t explore any of that, instead, it quickly pivots to suggesting that Musk is simply wrong or overreacting, without fully disproving his core point.
In short, the article uses true information to shape a narrative, but it’s selective in what it focuses on and seems more interested in discrediting Musk’s framing than actually answering the bigger questions. In my view, the article reads less like journalism and more like an attempt to tell readers how to interpret the facts rather than just presenting them and letting people decide for themself.
"In short, the article uses true information"
Isn't that what matters?
You can question the objectivity of the New York times all day long,... What matter are the facts. If you have something that discredits what they have written, I'd like to see that.
Some was factual, but some was conjecture, spin. As I shared in my comment.
