   This makes me mad! As a preschool teacher I oppose what has happened to this 4 year old just because he likes his hair long. Schools shouldn't police kids hair like that. They can ask the parents to get it cut but hello if it's not disrupting the class then why not let him keep it the way he wants it?
   
   I saw a student in Hawaii, a cute little boy, have hair LONGER than this kid. Longer meaning it can be in a full ponytail and half way down his back.
   
   this is just plain stupid!

         crazd, what kind of school was this? even if private, especially if religious private, I don't get it. all the men of Bible times had long hair.
         
         my oldest son had long hair at preschool age for a while, he looked cute. later in high school and college he wore his hair long. straight A student, graduated with high honors from college and is very successful now in his career. he cut his hair when he was ready for a change. now he wears it quite short.
         
         it's a ridiculous rule, they should be concerned about more important topics than a kids hair let alone what all of this says to the young boy.

   I've never heard of hair length being a part of the dress code in pre-school... there used to be a little guy at the school I worked at with hair down the middle of his back. that's what his parents liked and so did the little boy. he cut it when he turned 5, before he entered kindergarten.

   This is crazy. When I was teaching, I railed against one of our rules - the one that said girls could wear earrings but boys couldn't. I saw it as discrimination.
   
   I do agree that a dress code should be enforced. For example, kids shouldn't be able to wear bikinis to school. If it's not disruptive, however, I don't agree with banning it.

    And yes, individuality can manifest itself through haircuts, too - especially at a tender age. But this is not exactly my point. I would talking more about obedience. To become good bricks, kids need to learn to obey, and here is just another case of teaching  them to obey...

       I agree with teaching kids to obey rules Misha, but the rules must be worth obeying in the first place.  What do you tell a child when asked why they must wear short hair?  Other than it's against the rules, I mean.

    I think teachers should be concerned with more important things than the length of a student's hair!
    
    You wouldn't believe how much valuable class time the administrators expected us to waste on dress code:
    
    Is that skirt/dress more than four inches above the middle of the back of the girl's knee?
    
    Is that a flip-flop or a sandal?
    
    Does that shirt display gang colors?
    
    Does her pink hair disrupt class?
    
    Is she wearing a bra or not?
    
    Is that a sleeveless shirt or a tank top?
    
    Seriously, it got to be pretty ridiculous!

       You missed a classic one that happened here in Cali in a HS. A principal was fired thankfully over it...she was checking to see if girls were wearing thongs or regular underwear at a dance at school.

    Oh no, habee, pink hair? My granddaughter wants to dye her hair pink, her dad has okayed it. I mentioned that it's against school rules, he asked why, what can I say? Who knows? He said they can just deal with it. I've never figured out how some of the rules came about - gang colors, yes. Except that puts COLORS off-limits, makes no sense, gang symbols would make sense. Hair length and color? Not seeing it...

    Man, I hated enforcing the dress code! I told the administrators if I had wanted to be a policeman, I would have attended the criminal justice program at our local college instead of driving 100 miles every day to go to a university. I taught seniors, and many of them already had a chip on their shoulder, so to speak. If I jumped on them the first thing when they passed through my door about something trivial, do you think that puts them in a mood conducive to learning?
    
    And by "you," I'm not referring to anyone here.

    If it was a private school, I could see the dress code for the hair, as many private schools have a very specific outlook.  For a public funded school though, I don't think they should be able to tell the kid how to cut his hair.
    
    One of my boys has chosen to grow his hair long, and it does get him some weird looks, but is also helping to toughen his skin, and decide what matters to him. 
    
    -For the record, I went to a private school that had a quite strict dress code.  I choose to be there, therefore I chose to abide by the rules.

    I went to a private school for 12th grade, they didn't allow boys to have long hair because of the Bible. That one verse about it doesn't even make sense - "Doesn't nature itself show you that if a man has long hair, it's a shame to him?"
    
    Well, no. Men's and women's hair both grow long if left alone, some longer and healthier than others. The whole hair issue is odd though on some young boys it makes them look like a girl (they aren't yet old enough to avoid the androgynous look).

    I went to private school from K-8th and had to follow the rules. girls could only wear skirts or shorts even when it was cold out in the winter. I've been back since and they have changed that rule. Thanks St. Michael's!

    It just seems it's hard enough for kids to develop a sense of individuality already these days without making things worse. It's almost as if they have to see what everyone else thinks is cool before they can decide for themselves.  Perhaps it's just me.

    My elder son's hair wasn't quite that extreme in kindergarten, but it wasn't all that far off.  If anyone EVER told me he was violating a dress code I'd have to get all my parent pals together at the school committee meetings and make a stink so big they're really regret it.  (Unless this was a private school, and I missed that reading the article - in which case, different thing.)

    I have been a sub in classes where boys had long hair, and it never bothered me a bit.  The school should not even ask his parents to cut his hair, and they are better off with out this school.  The people who administer it seem really narrow minded and uptight.

    When I was in 7th grade, I had hair long below my shoulders, I wore bermuda shorts everywhere and flip flops. No one said a damn thing, and yes, I realize I was a nerdy kid.
    
    And this is a 4 year old kid! And he's going to cut his hair off and donate it to a company that makes wigs for cancer kids! This just makes me MAD! This kid is probably smarter than anyone in his goddamn class!
    
    AS A PARENT I'm going to share my opinion in something.. I'm going to put this as nicely as I can: TAKE OUR KIDS OUT OF THESE PRISONS!

    Everyone, really, it's not THAT bad to have rules like this! On a sports team, everyone wears a uniform to promote team pride, identity, and unity. Schools try to instill pride in the kids to improve the environment; kids HAVE to be there so they may as well be proud of the school they go to and of being part of it.
    
    Yes, I'm arguing both sides but at least we should acknowledge there is another one.
