Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End. A profoundly imaginative story about an alien race that guides humanity into its next evolutionary phase.
Still looking for a copy of the book - don't know the name just remember it was a "reader", the cover was plain & orange. It was actually a collection of short stories and tales of fantasy for 5th graders (that in today's world would probably be used in 2nd grade)and was kept in my elementary school library. It included a fantasy about three princesses, two who were discontented and ugly and of course the one who was beautiful and had learned that doing for others would always bring joy and thus beauty into the world. Would love to give it to my neice but can't find the story anywhere. Made a HUGE impression on me in 4th grade and as an adult I haven't been able to get it out of my mind.
I recall a book like that entitled "More Friends And Neighbors." I think it was a 4th grade Reader Collection. I remember characters from it, among them Zeke, Chanticleer the Fox, and a tale about how you can't please everybody called 'TYLE'S MASTERPIECE.' Those were the good 'ol days....
I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN to ask here on HP! I'll go looking for your suggestion. Thanks so much...I've been looking for years. I believe things we read and experience when we are young have a huge impression on our thought processes later in life
You're quite welcome. The story I named above is actually entitled "TYLL'S MASTERPIECE." The reader is a 4th grade reader entitled "MORE TIMES AND PLACES." You can find a list of the Reader series by typing Tyll's Masterpiece into your Yahoo search bar, or type Dick and Jane Books Vintage Readers into the search bar. A picture of More Times And Places is visible @ http://www.tagnwag.com/forsale/dick_jan … ces55.html

Animal Farm -- Eric Blair pen name George Orwell
made me realize people that want to overthrow the system don't want to change the system for the good of humanity, they just want to change who's in charge
Animal farm for me too. Plus The Woman in White, No Name by Wilkie Collins. Oh and David Copperfield by Charles Dickens - I love that so much! Oh and also Watership Down. And Jane Eyre too. And Pride and Prejudice. Actually there's loads now I think about it.
"Bridge Across Forever", "Illusions The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah", and "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" by Richard Bach.
"Many Lives, Many Masters" by Dr. Weiss
"Replay" by Ken Grimwood
"Almost Adam" by Petru Popescu
I could go on and on...
My choice is Blindness by Jose Saramago (sp?). It's a dystopian sci-fi novel about a society struck by a sudden disease that makes people blind. The blindness is highly contagious so the powers that be decide to round up the victims of the illness and place them under quarantine in an insane asylum. The victims of the illness don't receive medical care and are essentially prisoners. It is a disturbing look at humanity and what we are capable of. A must read but not for young kids.
Saramago also wrote The Cave, which is based on Plato's famous allegory. He has written a third book called Seeing.
Since we're only supposed to choose one I'll stop there.
The book "Love Story" was very moving and touching to me. I enjoyed it but I cried.
