After posting first hubs, now what?

   Hello, my learned colleagues! I am new to this (posted a few hubs last night for the first time). I have been reading forums for several hours today, as well as a few interesting hubs (thank you, Mark Knowles), about blogging and creating links and adsense, and all kinds of intriguing stuff that I now realize I need to learn how to do. Problem is, while I am a confident and competent writer, and I believe I can write to topics that will get interest, I have no idea how to promote my work with all this internet jazz. I did sign up for the adsense, amazon, and ebay accounts that I was prompted to sign up for (I already sell a few books on amazon and a few collectibles on ebay; so will that help? See how hopeless I am?)
   
   What next? Do I have to go in to Amazon/ebay/adsense and physically DO something to help direct traffic to my articles, or does that part of promotion take care of itself? I'm working on my very first website now, so I can sort of see how to create a link that will get to my articles here. (But while I bought the HTML Book for Dummies, I'm still only on chapter 2.)
   
   I always thought the facebook/myspace/social networking pages were a waste of time, but now it seems I should begin to utilize these? And incorporate links to my articles?
   
   Also, I have a couple of ideas for blogs I would like to create. I'm a high school English teacher who has given her all and now needs some me time, so I'm taking off this year to see if I can make a go of freelancing.
   
   I don't need to generate a lot of income, but I would really like to see maybe $100 per day by the end of six months via article writing/promotion. I'm a really hard worker. Can it be done?
   
   What should I focus on first? Write articles of interest, create blogs, finish my website, learn html, do something about adsense, what? (Feel free to check out my hubpages and give me any and all useful feedback; my feelings won't be hurt, I'm here to learn.)
   
   If all of this has been addressed on hubpages or particular forum topics, I don't mean to waste your time. Just point me in the right direction and I will apply myself. I'm just a little overwhelmed and need some guidance as to where to begin.

   Your need outside traffic to make money at HubPages - this usually means search engine traffic, which means getting some links to your Hubs from other places. A blog at blogger.com or comments on existing blogs (as long as they allow links in their comments sections to be followed by the GoogleBot) will do just fine.
   
   The downside of HubPages is that you share the revenue, and the Adsense engine doesn't do much optimising until you have had tens of thousands of page views, so your click through rates will be low. On the plus side Google likes HubPages, and it's easy to get a Hub up on the search results.
   
   In the long term, you will need your own sites to make decent money with Adsense. We make $2 to $5 per 1000 visitors at HubPages, whereas on my own Adsense sites I make anywhere from $10 to $80 per 1000 visitors.
   
   Now to make $100 per day from Adsense, you are looking at producing 20,000 visits per day at HubPages - that's a LOT. More than all but a handful of Hubbers achieve currently.
   
   Even if you had your own site or sites, making $100 per day from Adsense would require 1500 to 10,000 visits per day (assuming you have high-value keywords). This is doable, but you had better get researching Search Engine Optimisation, keyword research, article marketing, social bookmarking and the like.

         Yes, SunSeven, if only I could combine your traffic numbers with my eCPM ... sigh. Instant wealth.
         
         I actually make more than $5 per 1000 page views at HubPages - I make almost $7 per 1000 now. Targeting higher priced clicks works!
         
         I am still working on the whole traffic issue, though. Our best site gets 90c clicks, but not yet enough visitors for me to retire to my tropical island ...

               Well, for a blunt instrument to get you started, go and look at how much you will need to pay for an Adwords click on the keyword. The publisher will get a portion of that - I use 40% as my rule of thumb, although you don't get 40% of a $20 click! Content clicks are less than search clicks. The best clicks we have had as a publisher have been around the $2.75 mark.
               
               Also look at the competition for the ads - do a Google search on the keyword, and see how many advertisers there are. More competition, higher prices.
               
               We are nowhere near as scientific about it as we could be, but we are seeing good eCPMs and good click prices on our own sites anyway.
               
               I don't worry too much about HubPages average click prices, because I have so many Hubs on low-paying topics, but I have started to focus on adding higher-paying topics, and it is showing up in higher eCPMs at HubPages, too.

   Also, I have another question. I just now read on another thread that articles I posted on helium have to be substantially rewritten before posting here...I didn't realize that, and I posted a few articles I had previously posted to helium. Should I take them off entirely, or rewrite them and post the revisions? Sorry for the gaffe, and I will try to fix it ASAP.

   Hey, just because you're naive...no worries!  I was so ignorant and new to this...and these forums, and folks like Jenny are happy to help and offer information. That was 4 months ago, and now I'm just a hubbing fool! So re" your hubs...Don't necessarily delete...look them over...can you fix them?
   Take an evening or so and look over the hubs...what do you like to write about? You were an English major...so books? Hobbies?  Look at the requests...some of my "biggest" hubs have come from answering requests...they work to spur my brain, remembering topics that I really did know enough to write about, just didn't weren't high on my own inner radar.
   And, although it's still in the works, I got enough confidence here that I'm developing a real website to get that Un-shared revenue that Jenny talking about. 
   Great success can start with small beginnings!

   Thanks for the encouragement! I needed that; it's a bit overwhelming. I've removed them, but I'll try and revise them substantially before reposting; I don't want to start off on the wrong foot (guess it's too late). I really just wanted to ask opinions about what is the next step, after one posts articles. What is the most important, most efficient thing to learn and apply first... from some of you who clearly are very knowledgeable about internet marketing...

      After six weeks, I'd made 5x this much...still not going to pay the elec. bill...and my $$$ have risen steadily.  I'll get my first check, at rate I'm going 5 months after joining...and I just keep writing and adding more and more hubs for more and more views.  Two other hubbers whose work I think's great, also have told me that it took about 5 months to get the first check and that they now get monthly checks which consistently grow.

    To summarize, I would say that $100/day is not possible here on HP. You will need a Top Quality Blog + Website. Use all three (Blog+Website+HP) to promote all your work and to get traffic. Use SEO Tools like Pictures (with ATL Tag) + Videos + RSS + Well Researched Keywords and Topic. Use the Main Keyword in the content itself. Quality and Original Content will get Automatic Traffic. If you read the TOP 10 Hubbers here, you will learn all the secrets.

    Wow, just finished a rewrite and checked in to see if there were any posts... Thank you very much for your comments! I truly appreciate them. However, I'm sorry to hear that I won't be able to rely on article income at HP in lieu of a real job
    
    Ray, your comment gives me a ray of hope. I was pretty sure that to get fairly high article income, I would have to pursue some ideas for blogs/websites. I will certainly do as you suggest.
    
    I suppose I'll have to learn how to do this the slow way, by trial and error. Of course, if anyone wants to recommend his/her how-to hubs, blogs, or whatever, on how to do some of this, I'd love to read them!

    Exactly...Slow and Steady Wins the race. Patience is a Virtue. I can say this because I made the mistake and learnt. I can pass on this experience to people so that they can learn and do not repeat the mistakes that I made as a Newbie.

    Write  quality content,originality works a lot.Dont worry too much about SEO.It requires time,as a beginner your priorities must be creating in good hubs.With the passage of time you will learn many new different things automatically.

    Although, if you got something useful from whichever of my hubs you read, I would say that is one of my low paying hubs
    
    I am honest when I write my hubs, so whatever I said did or didn't work for me, did or didn't work lol
    
    First thing to remember is the amount of BS floating around and whether or not it applies to you and the subjects you write on. Earning $70 per 1,000 visitors means nothing if you only get 250 visits a month
    
    I agree with the basis of what has been said already though. $100 a day is unrealistic within 6 months. It takes time to develop an income from this and I think $100 a day just from hubpages is probably not achievable - if you could do that, you would be better off with your own site and make the $166 a day instead.....
    
    Don't believe 95% of what you read and get told.
    
    I don't know what other people are making, but it is possible to make more than $100 a day. It took me over a year to get to that point but much of my income comes from writing for other people.

    Solely from Amazon sales - but no where near $100 a day - more like $10. So, I guess if you do your research and promotion, and can create 10 pages that make $10 a day - $100 a day is possible. Or if I could get 10x the traffic But how long before this page goes out of date? And it took me almost a year to find the best payer for me.
    
    90% of my hubpages income comes from 10% 0f my pages Trial and error. As far as hubpages goes:
    
    Adsense is good but the high paying subjects are lower traffic and more competitive. And it seems to work best if you write "teaser" content and promote it aggressively.
    
    Amazon and ebay can work very well if you write a good product review (selling a bike nets me around $60)
    
    Kontera is a waste of time (judging by my steadily dropping earnings and the rubbish I see them advertising - they have run out of advertisers) I will give them another month and drop them from my repertoire if they don't improve.

    I am right there with you, Mary.  Just getting started.  Have a few hubs posted and am starting a blog at http://encourager7.blogspot.com/.  I have earned a whopping $0.48 from Adsense so far, and nothing yet from Amazon or eBay.  I will be creating a web page.  That may be soon or may take awhile since I must pursue other ways to earn a living while trying to make this work.
