John insisted that his gold be taken with him to the afterlife. So, his family packed his casket with his gold when he died. He carried the gold up the stairway to heaven. It was heavy and took him many days. If someone was coming up behind him, he would gladly step aside with his gold and let them pass. At one point a man offered to help him carry the load- but he feared that the man might take some of it. "No, I'll be fine" he softly replied. Finally at the gates he insisted that the gold come with him. "I'll wait" he said. And wait he did. He sat on his gold for many days, but he was most patient. Finally God was informed that a man was waiting at the gates with his gold. God smiled and met with John there. John started, "God, I've obeyed your commandments and I've treated others better than myself, all I ask is that I can take this gold with me to your kingdom" God replied, "John, what you have said is true. You have obeyed my commandments and you treated others well." then God moved to one side of the gate and motioned him in, "bring all the pavement you wish".

Hi Sooner!  This parable is a timely reminder with the economy being the way it is, to not focus so much on acquiring and losing stuff, although it's very hard for me.  I would prefer to be rich rather than poor though.  I just won't worry about it after I die. smile

So, did the gold actually go up to heaven or was it the golds soul? Did anyone open the casket to find out?

So, someone checked the casket and the gold was gone and it was confirmed to have been taken "all the way" to heaven?

      Remarkable!

Heaven's streets are  paved with gold, so he took in pavement. Nice parable. My brother always used to say, "They tell you that you can't take it with you. But,, what if you can and the guy next to you has all his stuff?" So when he died, we put his fave things in the casket with him, just in case. lol....

Paved with gold from the Vatican's business.
      lol
      C'mon !!
Taking the gold with him is the  most selfish thing to do .
Why not give it to people in need ?
I don't see the parable in this story.
      Only nonsense !

Actually it's a joke though there is a small lesson to be learned from it. The most precious item on Earth is under God's feet.

Sorry. But I don't learn anything from this. Gold is a material thing to use in this world and not in another.

Tantrum, my brother didn't have any gold, or we surely would have used it somehow to help someone. We just put his fave coffee mug and some photos, mainly as an honor to him because he said that saying for so long. It made US feel better at the time. smile
