I got 2 interesting email yesterday. You have a Liberian scam artist on hubpages. Email me and I will forward the emails to you, so you can block the person from hubpages, or whatever you do about this.

It’s important that you do something about this. I had a friend who got roped into one of these scams and committed suicide when he ended up bankrupt. Maybe not too bright, but people are gullible.

    Thanks

I just checked the record of emails sent to you through the HubPages contact link, and I don't see any emails like the one you describe, so I think they must be coming from somewhere else.  If you are sure they are coming through HubPages, forward them to team(at)hubpages(dot)com.

Through hubpages is the only way they could have gotten my email. It is only public on my hubpages profile.

Nothing in that email indicates it was sent through the HubPages system.  An email coming through the contact form will say "(via HubPages)" after the contact email in the "From" field, and will have options to mark the email as spam or abuse at the bottom.  She says in the email that she read your articles on HubPages, but that does not indicate that she emailed you through our system, especially if you've posted your actual email address anywhere on the site.  That email address does not correspond to any HubPages user, and again, we have no record of this email being sent through our system.  I suggest you remove your email address wherever you have posted it publicly.

Also, just a general warning: even if someone does email you through our system initially, if you respond, that person now has your actual email address, so I suggest not replying to messages that do not state outright what it is the sender wants.  Many people are just trying to build email lists.  And, of course, hit the "report as abuse" link at the bottom of the email.

Okay thanks. No it’s not publicly listed anywhere. I meant the only link is on hubpages, as in the Contat______ whoever that appears on the right side of the hub.

But I see what you mean about the emails. The few others I received say via hubpages.

          Hey JeanMeriam,

I think you've made a mistake. The FIRST email you received was possibly from another Hubber, via HubPages emailing system.

However, ONCE you took the above action " I responded ", you were no longer using the HubPages emailing system.

You responded, and that gave your email to the person, who sent you the first email.

It is not nice to see other Hubbers sending out emails that are attached to scams.

But, again, once you responded, it was between you and them, and HubPages doesn't have anything to do with it.

Just to let you know, from what I've read in the forum. smile

I have reported this thread to HubPages, hopefully they will contact you. In the future, you should contact them directly about such matters, as they may not read these posts.

Send me your bank account information that I may deposit money. I can not access my money in my own country so I will deposit it into your account and you can keep 10% blah blah blah.
Later come requests for money in order for that money to be deposited, because oops I have to pay my lawyer in order to get that money into your account.

It’s been around for years. I thought it had all but died out. I believe it used to be the Nigerian scam. Switched countries I guess.

This is a sad picture of the lack of conscience of so many in this world.  It's not that far from the animals of the wild.  The deceiving predator circling the weak and desperate.

Sorry to hear about your associate.

Yeah, down the bottom of the email is two links. Spam I think and the other one... I can't remember right now. But if you click on either one it will automatically flag the mail to HP. Nothing else has to be done except for clicking on the link.

Jean, I googled your name and found this page where you've published an email address, right out in the open:

      http://www.niederngasse.com/magazine/poetry/meriam.html

Are you on Facebook?  Are you sure you've set your privacy settings so your email isn't visible?  What about on Twitter - I've heard that it's very easy to pick up email addresses from Twitter users.

You have profiles on Orble and Divine Caroline with a "contact" option that works exactly like the HubPages one.  Why are you so sure it's HubPages?

Also - never, ever respond to a scammer.  Until you reply, the scammer doesn't know whether your email address is still active.  Once they know it's active, they won't leave you alone.

That’s an old email address I don’t use. This one is new. Guess I will have to change it. Pain in the butt.

Well I didn’t know it was a scammer. I got a few emails from other people on here just saying hi, hubbers whose name I recognized.

Marisa Wrightposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Well, there's a lesson for you.  Spammers/scammers do occasionally use the "contact" facility on sites like HubPages, Orble, and others.  You should always read a message and decide whether it's legitimate before replying.
