Dogs sniffing butts

   Why do dogs sniff each other's butts?  My older brother once told me that at one time all dogs lived together.  Every night when they went to sleep they took off their butts.  One night the house caught fire.  As the dogs ran out they just grabbed any butt.  Now they're constantly sniffing, searching for their own butt. Any better idea?

      Maybe they sniff to see who has the strongest smell? The stronger the smell, the hornier they get?
      Or, they sniff to see if they've had sex with that butt yet?
      Who knows? Maybe they don't even know?

   Dogs have two anal glands in their rectums, which emit a strong scent. Dogs sniff each other’s butts in order to get a whiff of it. The aroma they smell gives them detailed information about the other dog.
   The aroma emitted from a dog’s butt tells other dogs vital information about him. It tells his sex, health status and temperament. Therefore, on a first meeting, two unacquainted dogs know if they want to befriend each other or not. So what does that mean to us? It means we need to trust our dog’s instincts.

      So it's like there's a computer chip stuck up their butt, and they insert their tongues or other instrument to gather the information? And then use it to know wether to befriend the other dog or not? Hmm, very interesting!

      two dogs meet on the street: one dog sniffs at the other's butt, says right away:  "Oh, you eat chicken?  I NEVER eat chicken! sorry, bud, not interested in knowing dogs who eat chicken!" and he walks away, stiffly, with nose in air!
