I have found that the best way to stay healthy, from experience, is to stay active, you don't have to do an excercise routine, walk, get invloved in activities like bowling, floor shuffling, carpet bowling. Walk asmuch as you can, I walk almost everywhere I go. Eat three meals a day, properly balanced meals, with low fat content, low sodium, and high protein. Don't buy pr-packaged foods, they are too high in fats, sodium, and preservatives. Make as much as you can from scratch, use fresh or frozen vegetables. Eat fruit and drink lots of fruit juice and most importantly, water.
Try to stay away from junk foods asmuch as possible. Take supplements, as you get older it's harder to loose weight and easier to gain it, your body needs certain vitamins, such as calcium, a good multi-vitamin,  glucosameen and vitamin C.
It is very important to try to stick to a routine, i you do certain things at the same time every week, or as close as possible, your body gets used to the routine and you will find it easier  to meet your goals. Doing housework, cleaning, sweeping, vacuuming, washing floors, doing laundry, on a regular basis is as good as going to the gym 3 times a week,

All of these things are true.  it is a good idea to stay away from junk food, eat well and stay active, but I do not think doing housework, cleaning etc. is enough to stay healthy.  As we age our metabolisms decrease and more than ever our bodies need good nutrition and aerobic activity. Going to the gym might be a better idea.

    Very good tips.

I've found that wearing a pedometer helps to keep me aware of how much I'm moving. If I see that I'm not moving enough I may schedule a cardio-walk or mini-tramp session to make sure I meet my goal for the day.

Walking is great so are eating REAL natural foods I believe if your Nutrition is right there is no need for supplements … But the getting older part ( currently 47) I actually seem fitter and leaner now than when i was younger ( of course maybe my starting benchmark wasn't very high! haha) I do gym 3 times a week, try to walk every night with the doggies, and jog  a couple of times a week BUT what I really do love which makes big improvements and I feel better each time I do it is good ol' YOGA

Certainly eating healthier (and not too much) is a big help to staying healthy without a lot of extra work. Giving up unhealthy habits isn't extra work. Walking is another excellent idea. If you really think about it, there are many  opportunities for working walking into your existing schedule and routines. If you need to go to the grocery store down the street for a few items, why not consider walking instead of driving your car. Maybe during your lunch break, after eating, you could take a short walk around the block (maybe a couple of times around). Another option if you spend a lot of time on the computer is to consider adjusting your work environment so that your computer and peripherals are placed on a stand up desk so that you can stand while working on the computer.

good tips, and yet some work is involved if nothing more than staying active. some work to build the muscles is helpful, but all can be done without a gym membership.

I have a hub about working out without equipment that has some helpful tips.

the key is consistency and a healthy diet.

I think your idea of just staying active is excellent.  People who say you have to do this or that exercise are probably overstating their point.

However, if you don't really have a routine, I'm worried that one might not be very consistent.  For example, what if there's no bowling league for a month and your shuffleboard partner moves to Costa Rica? You might end up sitting around the house sedentary for a while.

My plan is to have a base of three exercise routines a week, nothing serious, just swimming, walking and jogging if I feel like it.  Then if I get to replace that with something more social, cool.

    What do you think?
