Gary Kasparov was the world's youngest chess champion at the age of just 22. He is therefore one of the very best people in the world to show and tell you how to play chess and boy does he do that well in Checkmate. Kasparov is also a great teacher and in this book he explains:
- how to move chess pieces
- about the different chess pieces (king, queen, rook, knight, pawn, bishop)
- their values
- how to take other people's pieces
- how to write and read chess matches (notation)
- what checkmate is
- common traps
- a glossary
- more advanced moves like castling
- the opening play
- solutions for you to answer (with results at the back)
and more in a colourful, interesting and fun way making this THE BEST CHESS BOOK for Starters.

Learn Chess
Learn Chess: A Complete Course
Learn Chess: A Complete Course is another excellent chess book for beginners and I would actually recommend picking both this and Checkmate! up so you really do have just about everything you could want to know about chess covered.
This is a very comprehensive book (288 pages!) and will tell you everything you need to know about chess. This book will turn you from a chess newbie to an advanced intermediate chess player. At the end of every chapter there are lots of chess problems to solve and the answers can be found at the back of the book. Learn Chess is not light reading but if you take the time to look at it properly you would be able to write your own chess book for chess newbies!
