Mass Effect 2 is a fantastic shooter with a great story, and the character customization is awesome. However, if you have a PS3 I would recommend Uncharted 2.

You really can not go wrong with Halo: Reach. It's got an excellent sci-fi campaign with amazing characters and a story you will care about.

It is a prequel to the other Halo games so you do not need to worry about playing the other Halo titles.

The multiplayer aspect is top-notch as well and will keep you playing till the day before Halo 4 comes out next year. The customization options are sweet, allowing you to customize pretty much every aspect of your character (spartan).

You also get Firefight. A mode that lets you play with up to 4 other people with a simple yet dauntingly menacing premise. Fight and defeat waves upon waves of enemies and try to survive as long as you can. Once again it's great fun alone or with pals and will really test your skills.

And aside from all that you get Forge mode. It's pretty much a map editor that lets you do whatever you can think of. People go crazy with this and seeing and playing the amazing stuff people come up with is a testament to how awesome Halo Reach is, its community and universe.

What I have told you is an atom on the tip of the ice burg... All the modes i've mentioned are so deep I am discovering new things, and doing new things ALL THE TIME.

As I am writing this I feel the need to write more but that will just be more rambling...lol.

Buy this game now my friend. I promise you that you will be neither bored nor regretful after purchasing and playing it.

I would recommend Fallout. It's a great game, my favorite acutally. The story is very in-depth. The customization of your character is very particular. You have control of almost every aspect. All in all, the game took me over 170 hours to get that 100%. I'd recommend Fallout 3 over Fallout: New Vegas. New Vegas is good, but 3 is better.

Already got some good recommendations here. Though, start at the beginning if you're planning on going with Mass Effect - the first game might be starting to look a little dated by now, but the story was intended to take place over a trilogy of games from the beginning.

Fallout is worth a look, too - personally, I prefer New Vegas to 3, though, but that's just me. They're both good. New Vegas seems to me like it has more replay value, too.

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is an option, as well, although that's going back a few years now. Skyrim will be out soon, too.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution will be out pretty soon, and so far I've neard nothing but good things about it.

Also, Bioshock, maybe. Or, Red Dead Redemption. Grand Theft Auto 4. And, there's a decent collection of entertaining games on download from the live arcade.

I think you have some great answers already, so I'll just reinforce those. If you want shooting games, of course the Halo and Call of Duty series are going to be the most popular and easiest to find games for. For character customization Elder Scrolls: Oblivion would be a fine choice, and if you enjoy it, Skyrim (the next in the series and highly anticipated) will be out soon. Mass Effect puts the two things you are looking for together. It is a RPG Shooter style game. I did not play the first one, but I can vouch for the second being very well done. Tons of customization, party options, and gun accessibility. Fallout is another that is very similar to the style of Mass Effect. Both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas are very fun. You should probably check out Fallout3 first as you could probably pick it up for next to nothing today.
