Healthy Low Carb Diets

For those of you who want to take off pounds fast, the low carbohydrate diet may be just for you. Low carb diets have been the rage for many years. These diets often go from extremely low carbs to moderate intake of starchy foods. Dr. Atkins became famous with his strict low carb diet, and those with a desire to lose weight quickly followed his plan. Eating fatty bacon and juice steaks was quite a treat in the beginning, but soon one got the munchies and wanted something crunchy to eat. You can go on a low carb diet and have a variety of vegetables and even some fruit with your meals.

Eat Your Steak and Avoid Too Much Fat

Steak is often a favorite entree with most of us. Before you go on a steak rampage due to the low carb nature of meat, select cuts of meat that are low in fat. Skirt steak and tenderloin have low fat content. You can also enjoy pork tenderloin which also is low in fat. Protein is very satisfying and will satiate your appetite. Season the food well to really enjoy this diet.

For a special treat make a tasty wine sauce for the steak. Make sure to serve a crunchy green salad and fresh veggies to add a healthful note to your steak dinner.

Excellent ideas Carol! I love fruits and vegetables! I usually don't eat to much bread except last week when I had a crazy week and was running all the time for workshops in a museum (I worked with over 800 kids in 8 days). To compensate, at least I ate healthy bread : all grain with one kind with walnuts and the other one with hazelnuts and raisins. Now, I am back to my regular diet :-))))

Low Glycemic Index diets are probably better for you than low-carb diets. There isn't a whole lot of difference, but there are fruits that elicit a high glycemic response and those should not be eaten (Watermelon is one).

Mmmmm...i loooooove deviled eggs, but - sadly - i like them with fettuchinni alfredo! Oops..

i know there are a zillion different types of 'diets' out there - but i still believe that limiting any food group just makes us crave it more..

when i was a gymnast - ALL i thought about was FOOD FOOD FOOD...etc..(lol)..

since then - i refuse to own a scale - eat when my tummy says 'please' - and stop when i'm 'comfortable' again..

i replaced the words 'diets' and 'restrictions' with common sense..

it's worked for 50 (odd) years now..

      hmmm....maybe i should write a 'diet' book?

I do relatively low-carb, but not too low carb. While leafy greens are technically carbs, they are not (and should not be) counted as carbs in a low carb diet because their carbs and calories are so low. So you can eat as much leafy greens as you like and it would still be low-carb, which is what I do.

But I do like fish, lamb, and grass-fed beef. I try to avoid pork.

I also think low carb diets are helpful for people who just need to start losing weight because they make dieting simple, and you can eat as much as you want of certain types of food. For the long term, it is probably better to come up with a lifetime plan that includes carbs in moderation. i.e. whole grains. Though you can buy high fiber wraps and tortillas, you do miss having a sandwich. Note: I did lose about 30 pounds on a low carb diet, but I couldn't stay with it forever.
