It's no good pussy-footing around. Real meditation doesn't so much 'rest the mind' as ignore it. You are bringing your mind under the control of your real self instead of immersing and identifying with the mindstream of verbal thought, imagination and other 'elements' of the mind.
If you're serious, you need to book yourself into a 'serious' meditation centre and stay for no fewer than ten days. That will get the technique established to the point where you can then ease off to two sessions a day, morning and everning.
Keep it up for three weeks without missing one session in that time. If you miss even one, start counting the three weeks from the restart. It takes three weeks for the mind to accept a new habit. Once it becomes a habit, make a goal: 'I keep this up until ..." name the end of a month a couple of months away.
Once reached. "I'll keep it up for six months." Once reached, "I'll keep it up for a year."
Once you've been at it for a year it will become a lifetime habit. You'll feel you're letting yourself down if you don't go on.
Don't expect a thing as life altering as serious mediation to be a 'doddle.'
