Are dentures hard to get used to?

   Are dentures hard to get used to?
   
   I'm heading down the dentures path soon, and I'm very worried that I won't be able to get used to them. I had a great-uncle that used to take his out to eat because he said he couldn't eat with those dang things! He had the toughest gums in the South!
   
   Anyone willing to share their experiences?

   I had to use the "temporary" set for two years because of the expense, and they were hard to get used to, and I was a lot like your great uncle, but now that I have the permanant set, they aren't too bad. Not the same as when I had the ones I was born with, but not bad. Good luck!

   I'll let you know the day I have to get them; for now I'm holding onto the natural ones for as long as I can.

   Any new device that enters the mouth is bound to feel strange at first. The problem with dentures is that they can sometimes slip and you may need denture adhesive. Another improved alternative is to get implants with dentures, which will hold them in place and provide greater functionality.

   HI EclecticFusion ,
                  Full dentures are not very difficult to get used to, provided you follow the instructions of dentist. Intially since it is such a big thing in your mouth and you are used to without teeth , it would be little difficult. Also new dentures usually pinch at certain places in mouth and can cause ulcers but nothing to worry, take them to dentist and he would releive pressure points from denture. But soon in less than a month if your dentist has made good dentures, you would love your mouth and enjoy food.

   Good question I must say. I had wondered the same thing. The first couple days, you will probably cry and wonder what the heck you just did.  You have a very hard time saying words and you just want to take them out and leave them in the plastic container.  Well, DON"T!   You WILL get used to them after about a week. I sat there for hours and taught myself how to talk again. I would repeat a word if I had trouble with it. I would read a book, and find out what words I had trouble with at first. 
   
   After a good 2 or 3 weeks, you will be thankful for them and your new smile.  I see so many people walking around with no teeth in their mouth, but yet they have dentures.  They said they didn't like the feeling they had in their mouth for the first week, and didn't go try it again. That was crazy.  I would rather look better and take the time to get used to them.
   
   After a good few weeks, you will be fine.  They do take a while to get used to, like eating-that's the newest and hardest part.  You have to be able to figure out how much glue to use..all this comes with time.  You won't be able to eat like you used to as far as eating hard candy, steaks, apples, etc.  But, for a pretty mouth and no pain anymore, it's worth it.  Hope that helps..
