Whatever the number, it's too many! Smoking should be banned. It doesn't only affect the life of the smoker. Too many people worldwide still die from the effects of 2nd hand smoke every day.

    Hi interesting question.

I work with someone who must smoke around 20 to 25 per day.  When I was a smoker I averaged around 15 to 20 a day; give up almost 10 years ago.

I also notice (guilty of this myself years ago) that if you have an alcoholic drink you will smoke more.

My guess for an average smoker would be 20 a day.  A chain smoker will go through at least 40 if not more.

Congrats on quitting smile  I agree that some things make people smoke more, such as alcohol and coffee.

Hi Anand,  5- 6 cigarettes is not too bad.  Better if none, but you cannot judge people on their habits.  I have a lovely friend who has just given up on controlled tablets from her doctor and I think they are working; which is great.

The average person might not smoke at all , but those who do smoke may smoke as little as 4 cigarettes a day to the hardcore chain smokers who can get through 3 packets of 20 each day.
    Not the best health choice.

The average number of cigarettes smoked per day is the 20-40 cigarettes daily. In medicine, there is what is called Smoking index that determines the heaviness of smoking...

Thanks.  I've never heard of the smoking index.  I found this http://indrayan.weebly.com/smoking-index1.html and it wasn't what I expected.  It's a scientific formula and I guess I assumed to see some sort of easy to read chart smile  Pretty neat though

As a non smoker, I really don't know how many people smoke a day.....none of my friends smoke, but my brother does...but don't know how many he smokes. I'm not around him too often.  I just know that when in high school, I tried to smoke because certain friends were smoking, and when I took a puff, I knew that was my first and last puff of a cigarette....I thought it was nasty!....But, the main thing is it's so dangerous to smoke, and when you smoke and drink...I read that this is a lethal combination.....very, very dangerous!
