Why are eggs fine at room temperature only before they are ever refrigerated?

Once eggs have been in a refrigerator, they need to stay cold, but if they are kept out they are just fine. Why?

Hi workathomemoms, thanks for the info. :) I was wondering why my mom is able to store the eggs she gets from her chickens at room temperature for weeks, while the ones I buy from the store can't stay out because they have been refrigerated already.
