Prosperity gospel is attractive in peaceful times, because it says pray and you'll get more. Low effort, high potential reward.
Prosperity gospel in low times can be attractive - low effort, and doing any better is an attractive promise.
To say "things are bad, God wills this, put up with it and struggle through" means it is bad and may not get better, and you can pray but it may not change. But we want it to change, which makes this message harder to accept.
