I have never been a smoker, nor a drunk (alcoholic), so I don't know what it's like. But I find it interesting that some can quit "just like that", and others never can. Still others battle with off, and on, quitting, restarting etc.
Given all the health warnings, studies, medical breakthroughs, and early, needless deaths, you all still keep doing it. (those who do, I mean). Why is that? Is it the strength of the addiction, the waekness of the will to quit, some combination of the two, (or other)?
It's because most people find it very challenging to quit something they don't really want yo quit. People are driven by two factors pain and pleasure. As long as the pleasure of smoking out weighs the the pain(only the possibilty of dying from smoking) then a person will find it nearly impossible to quit. However, if that same person sees their doctor and the doctor says if you don't stop smoking now you'll die in three months- suddenly the person will often find it easy to quit because now the pain outweighs the pleasure.
If you don't drink and you don't smoke, you are healthy when you croak
Nice bit of poetry.
Your right, no matter, one still dies.
Smoking is my last vice. I've given up all the others. The times I've tried to quit EVERYONE has begged me to start again. Given the fact that I've been smoking for 35 years and lived with smokers before that, and that my Dr. tells me I have great lungs, and that smokers are 30% less likely to be overcome by smoke in a house fire, and that I have a job where a house fire is not out of the realm of possibility... Let's just say that it's safer for all around me to have me smoke. It's my calming and relaxing method, and it keeps me from killing people or going postal. Okay?
I like this philosophy:
"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways- Chardonnay in one hand chocolate in the other- body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "Whoa, what a ride!""
My parents quit smoking after nearly 40 years of doing so, a trick they used is to carry a used cigarette end in a jar of water around with you and every time you have an urge, take the jar out and smell it - I did and it is revolting.
Every person is different when it comes to addiction. You're right, some can quit easily while others can't. It has to do with a combination of a few things: history, genetics, and environment. There is a true condition of alcoholism where the body cannot metabolize ethanol properly because of the lack of a particular enzyme... this would be genetic. If your parents were both alcoholics you have a higher risk of becoming one... this is genetic and history. And environment, if you surround yourself with the temptation (people who also do it, a place where it is done) you are more likely to be unable to quit. Possibly the need to continue because of some benefit, such as steroid users, or those with eating disorders in professions where they need to be thin. There are other factors as well of course.
I think that there is some truth to that. Patrick Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic CA (highly linked to smoking and very life threatening) but he continues to smoke. Some people hit rock bottom and have a wake up call to do something. However, for some the power of addiction is too strong. I believe that some people really want to quit, but they can't... their brain and body won't let them.
Yes, what you are saying may be true. I'm confident there are some exceptions to what I said about pain and pleasure. Then again, Patrick might just think what do I have to lose I'm going to die soon anyway.
Yeah that is pretty much what he said. Still sucks, considering the body starts improving 20 minutes after you stop smoking. Could it save his life? Don't know. Probably still a good idea though.
I think the reason I never smoked before is because when I was very young (in 5th grade- 11 years old) my grandfather had cancer which we attribited to him smoking two packs per day. I remember watching him suffer his last months sitting in his living room chair with the look of great pain on his face. I remember feeling so helpless- powerless because I wanted to help but I couldn't. There was nothing I could do. When he finally died I felt like I hated smoking and wanted nothing to do with it.
I had a similar experience. I also have asthma, and would probably choke to death if I tried Everything about cigarettes turns me off. Now that I am older and educated about them, I know for sure I'll never smoke.
With the exception of alcohol, I've never tried anything for the fear of becoming addicted.
Yeah I never tried anything either except for Alcohol in moderation at a party or family get together. I could always just have a good time as much as anyone without drinking in excess.
This might sound abnormal but I would like to mention that ..
Spiritual research indicates that 96% of the causes of addictions are due to ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) or departed ancestors. The seeds of addictions are introduced in the womb itself by ghosts. Due to the spiritual nature of the cause of addictions, only spiritual remedies can successfully alleviate addiction.
A 3-step spiritual treatment program has been suggested that will ensure minimal withdrawal symptoms.

My Dad smoked from the age of 15 or 16, until my mother was pregnant with her second child. He got bored of going outside to have a fag in the winter, and decided to give up. He was then 28, and the next day, he just didn't smoke, and hasn't since.
He doesn't see what all the fuss is about, it was easy for him.
"The seeds of addiction are introduced into the womb itself by ghosts"????? HUH?
So all that prenatal bullshit I did to protect the future health of my 3 kids was for naught??? Damn you, Western Medicine!!!!!
My dad is having addiction of tobacco doc said him quite a lot times to quit it. But why don't they quit I don't know. May be they are lacking in age(He is 56+ now) and may be inspiration.
People aren't addicted to tobacco. They are addicted to the nicotine.
ya u r right.
when you chew that, it directly affects heart as my sister is doctor n told so many people to quit that habit..but due to lack of will power they are unable to do so..and suffers from cancer of lungs and mouth.
I would say there are many vices, that people are unable to stop or quit. Why they can't is what research laboratories are for.

I've made the committment to quit smoking (again). And I'm looking for others who are on this journey or considering it. I've never approached this before with support -- and that may have been the reason for my repetitive failures.Having read about the e-cigarette on here somewhere...
