    that would be the ripping of the endometrium from the uterus...sounds painful to me.

    Physiologically the endometrium  fills with blood to create an environment suitable for  receive the fertilized egg. If this do not happen the accumulated blood is no longer necessary and is ejected .  The pain is caused by contractions of uterus.

    . . . and if the egg is fertilized by sperm, the growing fetus needs a fertile environment, so the blood lining is not shed.  It substains the baby as he/she grows.

    well for one if YOUR NOT PREGNANT then that will occur but when the uterine wall has become thickened and the pituitaty glands send signals to the brain to release hormones than will aid in breaking down the uterine lining then thats when bleeding occurs.
