What would your wishes be if you were in a coma or "brain dead"?
If for some reason this happened to you, what would you want your family to do? Do they know about your wishes regarding this subject?
My wife already has the instruction to have the machine turned off if medical opinion suggested that I would remain in a vegetative state.
A few years ago there was a case in which this situation occurred. Terry Schaivo was in a vegetative state, I'm sure everyone knows about it, it received national attention. Our family thought about our wishes together at that time, and most of us said the same thing: unplug the machine.
Were I to be brain dead I would want the machine switched off, without doubt. It would mean nothing to me. I would not be aware it had happened. For my family it would be a great relief and allow them to continue their lives as best they could.
