ive had a period now for a week, its dark brown with stringy like bits in it,im 45 yrs old
Dark brown means it is old blood. My guess is your hormones are out of whack, which is really common in your mid to late 40's. A progesterone cream can help.
It does seem to be the kind of discharge you can get at the end of a period just before they stop. But if this is not usual for you then it could be an infection or inflammation. You don't always get symptoms and they can be treated very easily, so pay a visit to your doc. Hope this helps.
