Every child is good at something. Find out what it is and encourage your child to excel at it. Just remember it doesn't have to be a sport or something competitive. I teach 5th grade and there is a boy in my class who loves the musical "Cats" (I teach in Oklahoma so knowing show tunes isn't exactly the rage among boys his age). He absolutely loves to be able to share any information he has about it with the class-and the class is very accepting of his knowledge. Now they ask him questions all the time, which has helped him to become more involved with everyone and raised his self esteem!!
Give them compliments and even on the smallest and most seemingly innocuous things give them all out praise.
Well by narrating them incidences as and when it happens , can help them understand it pretty well
