One good way is to hold an ice pack wrapped in a cloth on the nose and lay back until it stops.

First reaction is usually to hold your head back, but this could lead to choking.  You should lean forward and hold your nose for about 5-10 minutes.  Gently release, and see if the bleeding has stopped or lessened.  If not, gently hold for another 5-10 minutes.  Most importantly, remain calm.  The sight of all that blood can be frightening, but stay calm.  If after this, your nose continues to bleed, you should consult your doctor.
Nose bleeds usually are not serious.  They can be cause by several things such as dry nose, allergies, etc.

Pinch the nostrils together for a few minutes. Sit still with your head leaning forward a little bit to prevent the blood from flowing down into your throat. Do NOT put your head down as this will increase bleeding, but rather keep your head above the level of your heart. You can add some ice to slow the bleeding. Wrap a towel around a bag of peas or an ice pack and press against your nose. The towel is to prevent tissue damage to the skin cue to freezing.
