What are the best exercises to strengthen an ankle that is aggravated by an old injury?
The injury is 5 years old, the ankle is 55 years old, unlike the one in the photo.
You're best bet is going to be with light and easy balancing exercises. It's hard to explain, and what I would suggest, is to go into a Gym and ask them what they would have you do. You might need to act 'interested' in joining the gym, even if you don't want to or can't afford it. But the main goal, is that they will show you what equipment to use and how to safely get your ankle back in place.
I've always had weak ankles, brought on by constant sprains. I used to put the heel of my palm on the outside of my ankle to provide some resistance and press my ankle outwards against the force for a few reps then repeat on the inside of my ankle. Doing that will give you a little more stability. You could also do calf and shin raises too.
