Is it more socially acceptable for older people to be overweight?

Like everyone I try not to judge people on looks, and I realise that there are medical conditions which mean people can gain a lot of weight or can't lose weight but, let's face it - we're living in an increasingly obese world. When I see an overweight person on the street, sometimes I can't help but think they could stand to lose a few pounds (for their health if nothing else). I'm not sure why, but when I see older people who are overweight, I rarely think this, and I was just wondering if that's the same for other people too?

Sometimes weight comes with age, no matter how healthy you eat, how much you exercise. You can't fight genetics forever.

That's true! I know some older people who are incredibly active (more active than me, even) but they still have that middle-age spread. Thanks for your comment!

I think that's a common perception, probably because older folks are usually retired so we often think of them as being sedentary - although of course many people have relatively active retirements.

It's not that I think all older people are overweight, just when I do see overweight older people I tend to think 'meh, fair enough' rather than thinking they should lose a pound or two. Thanks for your comment!

It's a fact that as you turn 40 you will gain 10 pounds each decade unless you follow a good diet and exercise.  Many people do not even realize they are gaining this weight - thus the problem begins to manifest in diabetes, etc.  Start early eating right and making some good choices in regard to health and follow through the years.
