I have had the hiccoughs for two hours now... How can I get rid of them? Please

    I have had the hiccoughs for two hours now... How can I get rid of them? Please Help.

    My boss claims trying not to breathe for two minutes gets rid of the hiccups. However, I normally just breathe deeply until it goes away. Also if you stop thinking about it, sometimes it dissipates.

    Several ways:
    1. Take a deep breath, hold it as long as you can, and breath out.
    2. Drink a swig of hot water, then swallow by several times.
    3. Wash your hands, then use your forefinger to stimulate your pharynx.

      Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I tried holding my breath,  not thinking about it, concentrating on something else, hot water, sugar and those hiccoughs still went on for another 2 hours! I finally tried drinking water upside down and it worked

    A nurse once told me that if you can concentrate on something you may be able to alter your breathing pattern, which in turn calms the spasm in your diaphragm. Her example was to list bald men, but I think any similar list would do the trick.
