Would you allow your teen to have a $20K bariatric surgery not covered by private insurance?
I heard an advertisement during my morning commute indicating that a local hospital is offering 3 bariatric surgical options to children under the age of 18. The ad indicates that the child needs to grab a parent and attend an hour long presentation to get an idea of what proceedure would be best for a child. Most employer or private pay insurance companies will not cover children and teens and the cost or most of the cost would be paid out of pocket. Children and teens on Medicaid or CHIP are more likely to be approved than private pay for bariatric surgery at the expense of the tax payers.
I am opposed to almost all uses of bariatric surgery. The benefit of other methods of weight loss - not only the physical benefit, but the psychological benefit of changing one's body through healthy self-discipline, are much better for people.
If I had a child who asked for bariatric surgery, I'd tell him he'd have to raise the money himself, and do it by running every day and getting friends to pitch in a penny a mile. Then he'd never need the surgery!
Those who are faced with obesity arising from hormonal imbalance or illness, please do not be offended. But please also know that there are excellent healthy solutions - without surgery - for you, too.
