How has the neurotoxin sweetener aspartame affected your life?

Is the food and drug administration protecting business, or people?

With out a doubt the FDA is protecting big pharma and the food industries.

As I see it - it's us, the people vs. the FDA

Mercury, high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, GMO, BHA, BHT, MSG, cigarettes are some of the few toxins the FDA approves; but the FDA has a problem with raw milk?

Aspartame research on rats show golf ball size tumors.
Our milk is tainted with synthetic hormones lilk rBGH, linked to breast cancer and gastrointestinal cancer (rBGH is banned in many countries).

According to Smart Publications, many FDA officials retire and go to work for big pharma, the food industries and visa-versa.

    It's a regular revolving-door.

    One example:
Margaret Miller … former chemical laboratory supervisor for Monsanto, … now Deputy Director of Human Food Safety and Consultative Services, New Animal Drug Evaluation Office, Center for Veterinary Medicine in the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

I have been of the opinion that artificial sweeteners have been bad tasting and I only consume bad tastes in medicine that will make me healthy not promise me weight loss. Sugar is one of the fattening few things I can eat and that limited.
Skeptical that FDA is in cahoots with big pharma.  If they were the flow of doctors from the FDA would go the other way.  (Big Pharma to FDA)
The job market for Doctors who are research specialists is sorta limited.
Do I think aspartame has caused people harm?  Entirely possible.  What FDA is guilty of these days is giving into political pressure.  They used to take years to approve drugs.  These days, in our get it now society they are releasing drugs according to initial findings without long term studies.  They are also giving the public what they want. With all the hype and pressure for losing weight aspartame looked like what the public wanted.  The public bought into the fade and got what they didn't want.  Saccharine was a much better sugar substitute, which by the way was developed for diabetic use not weight reduction.  The producers of saccharine got on the wrong side of someone and got banned.  Similar to DDT.  Millions have died from malaria because of the global ban on DDT which better research has found to be very safe, and effective when used in much lower concentrations than originally thought to be necessary.  FDA is only as good as the government that forces it to be politically correct.

"FDA is only as good as the government that forces it to be politically correct." - which is the entire problem, as we're witnessing the most corrupted federal government ever seen in the USA.

My answer will probably be the strangest one you get in answer to your question. I'm diabetic and do occasionally use sweeteners rather than sugar -- but not a lot -- just cut back on my sugar consumption. However, from the very first time I heard of aspartame I was put off by it. I think the word itself sounds like a disease and therefore I've never, ever, even tried it!

Good for you!  Practically every sweetener out there is better than aspartame!

I don't use this product anymore ever.  I avoid it, but back when I used to be a diet soda addict years ago I would have chronic migraines from the stuff.  I started eliminating triggers and once Aspartame was out of my life the headaches went away.  They were debilitating at times, and I'd end up in bed all day unable to move or do much.  The FDA is operated by people with an agenda, they go where the money is.

Thank You!  Yes...I'm always worried about my mother...who does get migraines...and can't be without her diet coke.

The more and more I've either researched or just heard about the effects of aspartame I'm put off more by it. I haven't verified this yet, but I've also heard that the maker of this sweetener wouldn't let his own children ingest it. That's enough for me to want to tuck tail and run from it. Good question!

Thanks very much, Kasman!  The stuff tastes okay...but I think I'd rather risk diabetes, or just finding something else to drink! smile

A 40 year old relative had numerous medical problems from this sweetener. Migraines, kidney stone urine leakage , weight gain, metabolism problems. She is addicted to diet coke and currently has a life coach helping her to get off the coke. Political pressure and deception got this sweetener approved as it was about to be denied. I do not trust the FDA. Can we trust any Agency these days that has any political involvement?

I think the answer is, "No," we can't trust our protecting agencies...and with Michael Taylor heading the FDA....it's all about the profits and the stock holders ....and ask your doctor today if abilify is right for you and the other five medications

I think they are protecting their money!  I drink the stuff and I immediately get a headache.  Now they are telling us that that does not happen.  I would rather not kill myself in this manner.  I wrote a hub about Sugar the Silent killer, but took it down and put it up on Wizzley.l  It tells of Aspartame and I think that I have a link in that somewhere about the effects of that DRUG.  I also know that when I drink or eat something that has it in it it leaves me with a bitter taste.  They also say that doesn't happen either.  America is not about healing and preventing illnesses anymore--it's about that almighty dollar and the more that you have the better person you are---NOT!!

You know...I might be inclined to drink some colas or sodas...if they had sugar instead of HFCS...and were less sweet.

Popular drinks are either insanely sweetened...or have aspartame...why can't there be something just ...lightly sweetened?

Nobody is forced to drink diet soft drinks that rot your teeth and brain, or any processed food. Why not just stick to water, fruit juice, tea, coffee, wine and beer, and fresh fruit, meat and vegetables?

We may not be "forced" to drink those drinks that is true.  We are however was being lied too until we found out for ourselves the detrimental effects of that substance is.

I always suspected there was something very wrong when obese people are seen to drink huge volumes of diet drinks. Clearly it was not helping them. Whilst we don't have to go lentil knitting organic we can choose to avoid processed foods and drinks.
