Why do people indulge smoking cigarettes or pot, drinking or pills when they know the effects will
KILL them? Do they have a deathwish?
A doctor on his morning walk, noticed the old lady pictured below:
She was sitting on her front step smoking a cigarette, so he walked up to her and said,
“I couldn't help but notice how happy you look! What is your secret to long life?”
“I smoke two packs a day,” she said. “Before I go to bed, I smoke a nice big joint.
Apart from that, I drink a quart bottle of Jack Daniels every day, and eat only junk food.
On weekends, I pop pills, have sex, and I don’t exercise at all.
“That is absolutely amazing said the Doctor! How old are you?”
“Forty,” she replied.
Is there something in your life that bothers you? Are there any dead elephants sitting on your shoulders? Reflect well.
I have struggled with a problem for nearly all my life! I do not smoke or do any of the things as mentioned above. Yet I still carry a load of something.
Why do we carry them, you ask? How I wish that more people will answer your question. Perhaps then I will get some tips. Do we enjoy the pleasure? Perhaps. Do we like the pain? no, but also yes. After all we repeat these experiences.
So I don't know, my friend, but while not excusing the above habits, knowing that I've got my own, certainly makes me more loving and less ready to judge. Perhaps this is a part of the journey. Heaven knows. Shalom.
Thanks for the answer manatita. If people answered the question I suppose we'd get tips on how to improve. But for most, facing reality is a hard thing to do. I'm one of the few who when told it's bad for you I had no desire to even try anything.
Thanks Tsad.
Your answer is strong and full of clarity. Believe in your inner beauty.
By the way, my problem came to my conscious mind, after many years of meditation. Not everyone is conscious of his/hers. Loving thoughts.
Smoking and drinking was presented as awesome and cool in the forties and fifties. Hollywood paid actors extra for smoking on screen. Shoot I have seen commercials that encourage parents to fill their baby bottles with Coke. Do it and do it now and find out later what the consequences will be later. At one time you had to make your own cigarettes. After taking the time to carefully roll a cigarette you really took time enjoying everything about your handiwork. It's the same with weed. We will find out in 20 years pot smokers have bred enzyme deficient children who are sickly. Oh, we already know that happens.
Instead of teaching people how to cope with the ups and downs of life we have a rescued and enabled a needy society that can't cope and looks for peace in all the wrong places.
Or in other words, I have no idea. I wonder as I watch young adults in my family as they bar hop and carry their pot cards and shake my head.
When a body has had their drink laced with who knows what and freak out, you think a body would realize bar hopping is dangerous. My lovely urban, on the 100 most desirable places to live town, has more DUI's that you can shake a stick at. You don't have to even be drunk and disorderly to get sent to jail. The arrest first and find out later.
My family wasn't raised to live like that, but they do.

What are the benefits of smoking cigarettes? As an ex smoker I know of all the negative sides of smoking, (way too many)... which was plenty enough to quit. But are there any positive side effects, if any, that come from smoking?
