Halloween day is from Hallows' Eve (All Saints Day), because Celtics think that their elders and loved ones returned to earth to guide their friends and families. And some people say that it is a long and long time ago, people thought that the all dead were able to take place once more on the night of All Hallows Eve such as witches, goblins and mutants. So children use different monsters costumes to confuse the dead and try to send them back to their graves from where they come.

Halloween comes from a wide variety of traditions long before All Saints Day and it is an interesting and eclectic mix of a variety of superstitions and traditions.  I would suggest looking at a book on the history of it.  smile It's quite fascinating.  Every tradition we have today has its roots in something else.  "Souling" is where trick-or-treating originates from for example.  In the US we are a "melting pot" of many cultures, so a lot of things were brought here and then a unique twist put on it.
