What was your MOST CALAMITOUS Thanksgiving family gathering ever when EVERYTHING
just went..........SO WRONG?
My worst ever was the year I was cooking for my in-laws and decided to take a short cut. I ordered a pre-cooked turkey from a local grocer. I was assured that it would only require a 30 minute trip in the oven to make it the perfect bird for our table. We pulled it from the oven just as everyone was seated at the table. As we began to carve it, blood ran from the cut like a freshly slaughtered bird. I grabbed it and ran from the table to the kitchen where I discovered that the bird still contained a bag of giblets inside and was still frozen solid and...raw on the inside. So much for impressing the in-laws. Our dinner was ruined and I have never tried to short-cut on a family meal again.
Mine was when my rather hate filled oldest brother became empowered by his coming out of the closet about his complete atheism accompanied by a vindictiveness toward Christ and God.
My father was long gone from that home and my elder brother sat at the head of the table and ridiculed giving thanks.
22 of us were just plain sad. My mom cried. Only half were Christians but nobody wants hate.
OK. It was the worst but it was the best. Mom came to see that all the physical preparations were important but that personal involvement was more so. I love my mother and I love my brother, But I love my children more and as bad as it was there was a purpose for everything under the sun.

What is your favorite Thanksgiving tradition?

For the first time in 13 years, my kids are spending Thanksgiving (or any other) day with their Dad all together in Florida. That leaves me all be my lonesome. I've already spoken to folks about working at a local food bank for part of that day, but any other suggestions on how to make it festive?
