Poem: I Dare You To Define Me
Personal Definitions
Sometimes I find it difficult to define the kind of person I am. I fluctuate, I learn, I grow. How I see myself and how others see me varies. Greatly. If there is one thing I am one hundred percent certain of, it is that right now my job does not correctly reflect me. Thus, a poem.
Me
The uniform doesn't always
clothe me.
that would be my job.
These shoes aren't always
of my choosing.
that would be my job.
This smile isn't always
mimicking.
That would be my job.
I am the only being
who can do the defining
for me.
I do the preferring.
Me.
And now I need money.
This job isn't all of me.
It doesn't do the defining.
I do.
I'm still consumed
with writing
and editing.
This job is just a means.
It isn't my entire being.
I am still me.
This register doesn't speak.
It cannot define me.
I'm still a sister, cat lover, me.
I am the only being
who can do the defining
for me.
