Legends Of Zyconia Part 11
Beware The Beasts That Roam These Caverns
The huge bird carried them all back to their camp. Crowds gathered round as it touched down. Terrek's small group climbed down from the bird's back and Terrek slid Jessica off his shoulder and into the waiting arms of two healers.
"Take good care of her, we need her on this quest," Terrek told them.
They both nodded as they carried her away.
Terrek stood in front of the huge bird and addressed the crowd.
'This is Selate. She has decided to join us on the quest. Don't treat her like an animal, because she is as intelligent as you or I. I want her to be given the same respect as you would give anyone else in this camp. Tomorrow we shall have a feast, so get some sleep," Terrek said.
At this news everyone cheered.
Terrek turned to Selate.
"You can sleep in one of the larger meeting tents. John, show her to her new tent."
Terrek walked toward his tent as the crowd dispersed. Diana, hearing the commotion, appeared in the doorway of her tent.
"Terrek," she breathed as she ran over into his arms.
"You're all right." she said in relief
"You didn't think I'd stay away too long, with someone as beautiful as you waiting for me, did you?" he grinned.
Diana blushed, then she replied.
"You were gone so long I was afraid something had happened to you."
"It would take more than a cave of oversized worms to hurt me," Terrek answered.
"I'm glad you're all right." Diana said smiling.
"Thank you," he said. "I think maybe I should rest now. I'm exhausted."
"Well goodnight Terrek," she said as she withdrew smiling at him.
"Goodnight. Diana," Terrek replied backing toward his tent.
Terrek entered his tent and sat on his bed, took off his tunic and swiftly lay down and pulled a fur blanket over himself, preparing to go to sleep.
Instantly, in his peripheral vision, he noticed a shadow, a dose of adrenaline shot through his body as he spun toward a dark corner of his tent. Terrek relaxed as he saw Zyron sitting crosslegged on the ground.
"Zyron," Terrek breathed.
"You should be resting. A healer is supposed to be tending to you. How did you slip by her?"
Zyron behaved as though he had not heard Terrek's statement.
"There is evil in the camp. Traitors who were sent by the Vicar."
"Yes, I've already felt their sting." Terrek said, gently patting his bandaged shoulder.
"That won't be the last attempt on your life. Be on your guard," warned Zyron.
Terrek reached down and picked up an oil lamp on the opposite side of his bed and turned back toward Zyron.
"How do-," Terrek stopped and looked around.
Zyron was gone.
