The Morning Conversations of Barack & Michelle Obama #37
November 7, 2012 - Always Bet on Black
A fictional (and satirical) account of the private morning conversations of Barack & Michelle Obama by Dexter Yarbrough. Number 37 in the series.
(Election night/morning at their home in Chicago)
Michelle: We need to get some sleep! It has been a long day!
Barack: Oh, Michelle! I can't sleep. We pulled it out. We won - again! And how can we go to sleep with all these people still here - celebrating?!
Leroy: Congrats, Mr. President. You managed to win a slim victory.
Barack: Thanks, Leroy. I think.
Leroy: Seriously, Mr. President, let's talk about this. I know you see me as a thorn in your side, but let's talk about your re-election.
Michelle: Why don't you two go into the parlor? I will leave you two alone and keep everyone else out.
Barack: What's up, Leroy?
Leroy: Honestly, I didn't think you were going to win. Not that I didn't want you to win, I just didn't think you could pull it out.
Barack: Why?
Leroy: Unemployment, gay marriage, Benghazi, immigration, the economy, should I go on?
Barack: (laughs) Alright, Leroy. I know that you and I haven't always gotten along, but there are two things you failed to remember.
Leroy: Really? What's that?
Barack: The power of incumbency and to always bet on black.
Leroy: Huh?
Barack: I'll make it plain. First, the true American people understood that it was not me that got us into this situation. It was my predecessor and his lackeys. Second, the true American people understand that it takes time to rebuild an economy. Third, the true American people understand that the veiled racism and prejudice actions of some in the GOP, and maybe even in my own party, WILL NEVER be allowed to reign supreme over this nation again.
Leroy: Go on.
Barack: I have been attacked in every way, Leroy. My race, past affiliations, religion, country of birth - anything that they could throw at me, they did. You should know what I mean. This is done every single day in the lives of black men. Accused, lied upon, judged, demeaned, treated disrespectfully.
Leroy: I do know what you mean.
Barack: Well, true Americans and people that have a good heart and resist the tactics of divide and conquer and chocolate-covered racism, rejected the ideas and beliefs of those that claim "family values" and Christ when they really speak and act like Satan.
Leroy: Man, that's deep.
Barack: A coalition of true Americans put me over. Now, I do realize that my vote numbers aren't the same as 2008, but hey, I was running against John McCain!
Leroy: Ha ha ha!!
Barack: (smiles) But, between you and me, Romney and the GOP could have won this thing.
Leroy: How?
Barack: The true Americans that vote with the GOP need to stop shielding and making excuses for the racists in their party. White women don't like it, blacks don't like it and Latino's don't like it. America doesn't like it and GOD doesn't like it.
Leroy: Amen!
Barack: The GOP has to get with it. These are not the 1950's, America has changed and they ARE NOT the party of Lincoln. They need to stop being exclusive and become inclusive. They need to re-brand! This is why Colin Powell supports me against his own party.
Leroy: They need a new image, huh?
Barack: Black people are not stupid. They know that the Democrats and progressives don't always have their interests at heart. This is where the GOP fails every time. All they need to do is stop with the discriminatory ideals and truly embrace change. They need to start building relationships in the black and Latino communities. The gay community as well. And young people are tired of their nonsense. They can see right through their parents and grandparents.
Leroy: Yeah! Not everyone wants to fit the image of the clean-shaven white male. America is a melting pot of many people and ideals and the final product doesn't necessarily wear a cowboy hat and drives a Dodge Ram.
Barack: Exactly! And from now on, the GOP will continue to lose the Presidency, thanks to Bush/Cheney and now Romney/Ryan. True Americans don't want to go backwards. They want to go forward. There are many poor and middle class whites that are feeling the pain of high unemployment and lack of decent medical care. They will not vote for the GOP. It's over for them - unless they change.
Leroy: Wow. This is the first time we have ever had a real conversation.
Barack: That's because you are always telling jokes and working my nerves!
Leroy: And I was thinking that the reason you won was because of Hurricane Sandy and Governor Christie!
Barack: You bastard!
Leroy: Just kidding!
Barack: But you know what, Leroy?
Leroy: What?
Barack: I am the happiest man alive! I just won a second term! Let the party begin! Oh, and Leroy. Always bet on black!
(Barack dances as he leaves the room to join the guests)
Leroy: Hooray! Congratulations, Mr. President! You deserve it!
