The absolute BEST motivation to read that I have ever been able to do, is this.
Sitting in my reading Library (Ok, it's my bathroom, who cares?) As I am reading a book that I am truly enjoying, I bust out laughing at a good part, I laugh til the tears run down my face, because the Author has described it so well that I am picturing it in my mind. My children come running to see what is so funny. I try to read them the lines that caused my laughter. It comes out gibberish, from my giggling. I am then told by them, "I'll just wait until your finished to read it myself."
The joy then comes as they are reading in their 'Library', and I hear a burst of laughter.
First you assess he needs and enthusiasms of your potential pupils, then you link into it with literacy.
For example the best way to encourage basic literacy and numeracy among peasant farmers is to teach them how to fill in their tax returns.
