    It is inspired by the tragic plane crash on February 3, 1959 that was carrying some of the greatest musicians at the time, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the "Big Bopper". It was dubbed "The day the music died" in the song American Pie. Here is more about the incident. Oh and Leni Sands, that's rather rude to just include a very crude and wordy link.

    It means exactly what you think that it means.  Or were you asking what it means to Don McLean?

    The value of poetry and prose is that images are provided that can become analogous to various and sundry persons for a cornucopia of things.  This allows the author or poet to write a song about dirty laundry that makes women in far away places cry tears of love.
