Anything by Lois McMaster Bujold. She is one of the few widely acclaimed female authors of science fiction. She not only gets the science parts of it right she does great character development, loves to throw in moral dilemmas, adds a touch (or more) of "who done it," a dollop of horror and even some fashion sense. Her female characters are strong and fascinating. As are her male characters.

I suggest reading the short story "The Mountains of Mourning" for a taste.

You can actually read a free download of the story here; http://www.webscription.net/s-13-lois-m … rID=0&

It's a young adult book, but I Am Number Four was excellent!

Try "A Voyage to Arcturus".  It is an extremely unique read, and can be downloaded for free from Project Gutenberg.

The Gods Themselves by Isaac Asimov is one of the best books I've ever read.  It's a science fiction, but still a good read.

I second Lois McMaster Bujold, and since you like Fantasy SF, you may like the recommendations I made in the following hubs:

    http://hubpages.com/hub/Kick-Ass-Author … asyPart-II

And if that's way too much fantasy/sci-fi for you, then have a look at the novels here:

Happy reading, and drop me a line if you have time and let me know what you picked.
