Good little question.. I like Susan Wright's Star Trek Novels.. also Diane Carrey
I'm not a big sci-fi reader. However, I own almost every book written by Kurt Vonnegut. He was simply exceptional.
I don't read a lot of sci-fi but my hubby and his best man do, and they love Spider Robinson, a man of puns and some weird scenarios. I tried to read a few, but sci-fi just isn't my thing, but if you're looking for adventure, I would try some of those.
My absolute #1 is Ray Bradbury.
But Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and Orson Scot Card are close seconds.
Without repeating those that the others answered, I'd cast my vote for Michael Crichton. The man knew how to write his Sci-Fi well enough to make it actually seem plausible that the situations could really happen. Suspension of disbelief is much easier with him than with most other authors I've read.
