I am a little old fashioned in my detective story writers.

For me the best was Agatha Christie. I particularly like her stories involving the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot.

I like Patricia Cornwell.  She has so many books now though that I cannot possibly keep up!

The top detective author has to be Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - not just for Sherlock Holmes. The man himself was a top-ranking diagnostician (someone the NHS could do with these days instead of all the 'flannel' on the admin side), and could tell at a glance what somebody did for a living, what ailed them and why, hence his Doctor Watson character as a side-kick.

I love Agatha Christie, her analysis of human behavior and knowledge of human personality is amazing. "Ten Little Indians", "And there was None" are two of my favorites. I could read her books again and  again and still enjoy them. It seems like seeing old friends when I re-read her books.
