What music playlists do you listen to while you write?

I've created several different playlists for when I write, including "no-lyrics", "scene inspiration" and "overall inspiration" - what do you listen to when you write? What artists or genres help you focus on different aspects of writing?

I enjoy listening to smooth jazz when I write and do assignments for college. With no lyrics, it's not distracting, compared to music with lyrics. I couldn't name a single jazz artist, I just enjoy the relaxing quality of the music, and I think it truly helps me to focus.

Classical music or instrumental music from movie soundtracks always help me write.  The soundtrack from the movie Unfaithful and Braveheart are always good, and Vivaldi is a GOD when it comes to inspiration.  Listening to songs with words usually tends to distract unless you are searching for your next idea.  Then you just let the images play out in your head.  I have also found that certain smells and atmospheres drastically change your writing mood, so depending on the story you are telling, make sure wherever you are, it fits.

I like pop songs from my favorite artists. Also, when I am on my online class I always play pop rock songs for me to relief. http://www.elearners.com/courses/

I listen to either jazz or neo-soul music. It relaxes my mind. I listen to the words with neo-soul music, it's very poetic and thought-provoking.

This really depends on what kind of mood I'm in. Having multiple playlist is essential for me. For articles and blogs I turn up my favorite radio station or playlist and listen to classic rock from the 60's, 70's and 90's. Mostly The Beatles, Clapton, and pop rock. When it comes to more personal writing such as on a book project or working manuscript than my taste change, pleasant lyrical songs from Coldplay or non-lyrical inspirational music will do too, even jazz. I even enjoy listening to just nature sounds, chimes, wind, ocean, and thunderous rainstorms. Having background music actually helps me to focus more and inspires me to write.

    Cathy,

I listen to Music Choice Hit List when I'm writing weight loss articles; Hip Hop works when I'm writing exercise articles; I listen to Country when I'm writing motivational articles; Classical is great when I'm writing articles for my Mom's generation, and I listen to Motown when I'm writing dating and relationship articles, and when I'm doing other things as well.
