Do you think that revealing the meaning of a poem makes the poem less appreciated?
No, I think giving a little background information as to the inspiration behind the poem could actually result in it being more appreciated. Most of the time, I like to write a paragraph about the initial thoughts that led to what I wrote. When you attend a poetry reading, the poet always speaks about each poem and lets you into the background, so to speak. In the end, a powerful poem will result in readers identifying with it in a personal way, which might be different from the original meaning, but is just as valuable. In the end, the artist’s desire is to invoke emotion and bond with the reader, , however that may come about.
