It is growing in my raised vegetable bed, but doesn't look like any vegetable I have planted. On the other hand, it doesn't look like any weed I have seen, so maybe it is an escaped seed from my seed box. The leaves are quite large - you can compare them against the brassicas and grape vine in the background. My garden is in London - in a temperate climate zone.

I agree that it appears to be a sunflower. The stem should be covered w/ stiff hairs that are irritating to the touch.
Thanks Dolores Monet and Rochelle Frank. It has now developed quite a thick stem, and my bet is still on sunflower - not quite what I need in my vegetable patch, but I enjoy the cliff-hanger. Of course I'll tell you once it develops recognizably
