How do I grow beautiful hydrangeas in zone 6?

I live in NJ in zone 6, and I planted four hydrangeas three years ago in our back yard to cover the septic pipe area. I also planted a high grass and black eyed susans. Everything else grows well, but the hydrangea usually do not flower. I may get one or two flowers every year. The first year I had beautiful flowers. I am wondering what I could be doing wrong. I used to cut them back in the fall or spring. This year I didn't and am wondering if it will make a difference this summer...I can't wait to see!
