What to plant in in my garden in the late summer?

So now I have some empty space in my small garden from lettuce that has been harvested and failed plants that I have pulled out. What should I plant here that I can harvest with the time remaining?

Gardeners have a choice of three types of plants.

An annual plant is a plant that usually germinates, flowers, and dies in a year or season.

A biennial plant is a flowering plant that takes two years to complete its biological lifecycle.

A perennial plant or perennial is a plant that lives for more than two years.

Here is a list of some great summer plants:

    Black-eyed susans
    Adonis plants
    Ice plant
    hollyhocks
    Candytuft
    Columbine flowers
    Lenten rose
    Pasque flower
    Oriental poppies
    Maltese cross
    Bleeding hearts
    Creeping phlox plants
