What are fast growing trees you can plant in your naked yard?

When I was a kid, my parents started with an empty lot, and never seemed to pick hardy or fast growing trees?  What trees are good when you you want to see pay off in a few years?

Try planting privet, if it isn't considered invasive in your area. You can chop the base limbs and train a main trunk into a tree.

The privet blossoms white and is very fragrant. It has an arching/weeping habit as it grows older. It takes winds well, too. The limbs are very bendy so don't snap in high winds. The large limbs can sometimes break in very strong wind though.

When you plant those, plant your slower-growing trees too. You'll have the privet grow into a fast shade tree (two years or so in good ground) and then chop the privet down when your slower-growing trees catch up. ;-)

Don't buy dwarf-types. A standard size is perfect as a tree. The golden privet is lovely, I have one I am training as a permanent tree in our side yard.

You can fertilize with chicken manure as they adore nitrogen. The more food and water you give them, the quicker they grow. They are easy to care for and have no pests.

    Works great for us!

The privet is the tree in the center of the photo. That privet is about three or so years old (it was a small sapling when I planted it there a few years ago). It would have grow much quicker if I watered/fed it.

The one to the far left, is an althea shrub.

    Good luck!!!

Poplars- If you want a barrier, pick these trees. I ordered some out of a nursery catalogue and planted them between the neighbors and my house(we were too close for comfort) They grew 4 feet the first year and 6 feet the second year! Pretty, too.
