What's the best small tree for a small garden?

Ideallly one that flowers each year and doesn't need much looking after.

Crab apples give an excellent show of flowers and can produce some excellent architectural forms.
Flowering cherries, weeping and the fastigate varieties.
Japanese Mountain Maples, the flowers are not very showy; however, you get a triplle burst of colour, the red, fresh folliage of spring turning to light green, followed by the yellow, reds, and oranges of the autumn folliage.

if you have only space in your garden for just one tree, then consider getting a Rowan tree, also known as sorbus aucuparia or the European mountain ash. With its roots deeply nestled in Celtic mythology, this tree will bring good luck into your home while warding off evil spirits. read more
