Can anyone recommend a good mattress?

My husband and I are looking for a new mattress and the reviews are so confusing. Some people like Tempur Pedic which gives me a back ache. Others like certain brands but reviews are all over the place on them. We basically just want a durable king sized pillow top mattress that will give good support and hold it's shape for years to come.

This is a question EVERYONE has - I sold mattresses up until recently, and you are not alone. That's why I've been writing Hubs recently on buying a new mattress - you might want to check them out. However, the really detailed Hubs on mattress construction and types are yet to be finished.

The short answer - if you want one that will support your weight and hold it's shape for years AND is good for your body - is a GOOD Latex mattress, either a solid core or hybrid Innerspring.

Frankly, that opens up more questions. I'd advise trying those two kinds of mattresses to start out with - and make sure whatever 'Latex' mattresses you're looking at have thicknesses in their layers no THINNER than 3". If the layers are thinner and mixed with other foams - the durability of the Latex won't help you.

    Hope this helps! smile

Latex? Wow, I have never even heard of a latex mattress. Thank you for this information. I will keep it in mind.

Hi Karen! Maybe coincidence but I just wrote a hub on buying a safe chemical free mattress. After doing my research I would check out a place that that doesn't use chemicals to meet the flame retardant requirement such as HC organic Mattresses in Westport Connecticut. There are probably similar places that are even closer to where you live. Good luck!

Between hearing about Latex mattresses for the first time, and now chemicals added to mattresses for flame retardation, I realize I was really in the dark about mattresses. I expected recommendations like sleep number bed or Sealy, etc. Thanks much!

I've had to be more aware of this due to my health history but was surprised  that so many health issues were caused by chemicals in the mattress. Now you have much more to research than just price and comfort:) Good luck!

I'm sorry that TempurPedic gives you a backache - that's what I was going to recommend!  Mine is wonderful and one thing I love about it, aside from the comfort, is that when one partner moves or sits down, etc, the mattress doesn't move so the other person isn't disturbed.  The ONLY negative is that the mattress is very heavy, so it's a little bit of a workout to lift the corners when you change the bed.  But hey, workouts are healthy!  LOL!

Maybe it was just that particular brand. It wasn't THE Tempur Pedic...I think it was a knock off. Maybe I should try a real one. Thanks.
