Several hundred years ago there wasn't a form of money/currency. The economy was on the barter system, and at the very most people used precious metals to purchase goods. My guess is that if we destroyed all the money in the world, everyone would go back to bartering and trading, and once we realized how inefficient the system was...we would recreate a new currency.
