Where do you INVEST your money?

In this day and age it is very difficult to save money for the future let alone invest it in something that will return valuable gains.  In your opinion where is the best place to start and where do YOU invest yours?

Save to buy one house to live in and invest In the stock market.  Make sure you diversify your investments in the stock market (mixture of stocks and bonds). You can adjust your portfolio to your level of risk tolerance and your on your number of years to retirement.   Buying one house to live in can save you a lot of money on rent and can be a good tax benefit and can appreciate in value (sometimes).  Buying more than one house can be more trouble than it is worth, and you get a decreasing rate of return for each house.

In this economy?  First, WHAT money?  and second, with the scandals and cheating that is running rampant, I think if I had any money, it would be safer under the mattress, as in my great-grandparents' day!

Thank you all so much for this valuable advice.  I agree with the comment about putting money under the mattress but it wouldn't help in the long i don;t think. i will keep these in mind. Stocks I am kinda of weary of.
