How to Live a Good Life

Updated on November 16, 2015

We all live our lives the way we think we should and most of us think that we haven’t made too many mistakes. Even the most honest of us will tell that they have indeed made some mistakes, but they will never admit to making as many mistakes as they really have over the course of their lives. Now, I’m not saying that I know everything and that I am aware of all of my mistakes, but I have at least started looking at life and at what I do in life through different eyes – have you done the same? If you want to do this, keep reading!

A man should never be ashamed to own he has been in the wrong, which is but saying... that he is wiser today than he was yesterday. Alexander Pope really knew what he was talking about when he wrote down this thought. There is a universal problem we all have when it comes to living our lives – we all start thinking about our lives too late. Making mistakes is something that we all must do in order to learn new things in life, but the problem starts when we stop thinking about our mistakes and start making the exact same mistakes over and over again. When someone makes a mistake, they should always be forgiven for this mistake. However, we cannot expect to be forgiven for the same mistake every time we make it. We should cherish the first forgiveness we receive and do our best never to ask for forgiveness for the same mistake in the future, as this would mean that we didn’t learn anything from the first mistake we had made.

Everything that can be counted does not necessarily count; everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted. This is a fantastic thought by Albert Einstein, and it really captures the second problem most of us have in our lives. The fact is that we all need money in order to survive and pay the bills, but the problem with this lies in our need for more and more money. Even the richest people in the world always want to have more money, and greed is one of the worst qualities a person can possess. Money should be taken for what it is – paper with some value which has been set by people. This paper is hardly the most important paper in the world, as, for instance, a piece of paper with just a few words can and will always have greater power than all the money in the world. Many of us start realizing this only after something bad happens to us and we see that money definitely is something we can live without, unlike some other things such as love, health or peace of mind, just to name a few. Money cannot bring us happiness, health or love, and this is something that we have to remember at all times.

One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. We have all heard of the Golden Rule, but few of us have really thought about what it truly means and even fewer of us have accepted this idea. However, this is probably one of the most important rules of leading a good and fulfilled life. When we think about it, it is really simple – everything you do should come back to you, be it good or bad. If we all believed in the Golden Rule and if we all wanted to respect it, the world we live in would be a far better place and we would all be much happier and feel more fulfilled than we are now.

Living a life is at the same time very simple and very complicated, depending on how aware you are of everything you do and feel. Therefore, you should always think about what you do, as well as what you don’t do, share your feelings with a special someone and always remember that life is something beautiful and something that will pass beside you at the speed of light if you choose to let it. So, do not let your life pass beside you and decide to live your life in the best way possible!

      Hi, SilentReed!

Thanks for stopping by and leaving an engaging comment :)

Yes, I understand what you are saying about the "too late" thing, However, my point was somewhat different.

Namely, when I say that it is too late, I'm of the opinion that whenever we start thinking about our lives, it is always later than we could have and should have started thinking about it...

You've manage to encapsulate the basis for living a good life... Follow the golden rule and realize that life's true value should be appraised not by it's quantity but it's quality. However, for a person like me who has made many mistakes( life lessons:)) I would have to disagree with this statement "We all start thinking about our lives too late". There are many who became successful in their senior years. Some learn quickly while others require more time and perhaps a smack in the head to get it through :)). As long as there is life,it is never too late. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi, Thomas!

Thank you very much, I'm honored you liked my hub.

Yes, you are right about regrets and mistakes - it is very easy to have/make them, but afterwards we rarely know what to do with them :)

These are true and beautiful sentiments my friend!

As I start nudging into my fifth decade (in a couple years anyways)it's easy to get sidelined by the regrets and mistakes of the past.

Learning and moving forward is's actually why I am here I as to not have another regret...when it is finally too late to do anything about it.

      Beautiful Hub my friend!
